GENESIS G70 3.3T

Although it’s been on sale in overseas markets since 2016 and in Australia since 2019, the Genesis brand remains largely unknown here. During our week-long road test of the Genesis G70 we regularly had to explain that it was the luxury sub-brand of Hyundai, akin the relationship between Lexus and Toyota. The G70 is a mid-sized sports sedan or station wagon, the latter variant coming with the rather ostentatious title of Shooting Brake. The name harks back to pre-automotive days and referred to horse-drawn carriages that were used for transporting… Read more

IT’S DOWN TO BUSINESS FOR GENESIS SUPER SEDAN

Genesis, the opening chapter of the Old Testament, and the titular luxury arm of Hyundai, share a couple of questions: where do they come from and who are they meant for? Answers were given to me by a local Genesis high-up when the South Korean automobile maker set up shop Down Under. He told of an owner of a top-shelf Mercedes-Benz, who did not want his pride and joy to face the day-to-day risks of city and suburban driving, so he settled for a top-notch Genesis for half the price,… Read more

UPDATED GENESIS GV80 NOW COMES AS A (SORT OF)  COUPE

Genesis has unveiled the upgraded range of its GV80 SUV and added a coupe variant to the range. You may well ask how a tall-boxy five-door SUV can merge with a low-slung two-door coupe. It certainly takes a bit of imagination. Think of it as an SUV hatchback cross and it makes more sense. But, what’s in a name? Genesis says the SUV/Coupe concept combines the practicality of an SUV with the dynamism of a sports car. Of perhaps greater interest, the Coupe represents a preview of bigger things to… Read more

CURTAIN UP ON QUICK-CHANGE ARTIST

History has taken its time. But now the South Korean luxury car arm of Hyundai / Kia has put its foot on the accelerator, upgrading the GV60 electric sports utility vehicle just months after its debut Down Under. For the first time Genesis Connected Services gives access to a new level of safety and security conveniently through a smartphone, or embedded vehicle self-help, while on-air software gives owners wireless remote system updates. To add to this, Face Connect and Fingerprint Start lets users into the GV60 using facial recognition,… Read more

GENESIS GV80 30D AWD

Launched here in 2020, GV80 is Genesis’ first and largest SUV in a lineup that now boasts three of them. At just under five metres in length and with a kerb weight of about 2300kg, it’s a large, impressive-looking vehicle. The styling is tasteful, chiselled and eye-catching, highlighted by an imposing, almost heraldic, crest-shaped grille that is flanked by quad, twin-bar LED headlights — motifs that are repeated at the rear of the car. Competitors include Lexus, Volvo and of course the German contingent. STYLING In the context of recent… Read more

GENESIS G80 ELECTRIFIED

Genesis G80 Electrified is as its name suggests an electrified version of Genesis’ large G80 luxury sedan. But it is a conversion rather than a dedicated EV, evidenced by the blanked-out radiator grille. G80 is popular with hire car drivers because it offers plenty of splash for relatively little cash. However, with a small boot and tight rear seat the electrified version may not be quite as appealing. STYLING G80 is a big, impressive-looking car that radiates quality. It sits a shade over 5.0 metres at 5005mm, with a wheelbase… Read more

GENESIS GV60 REVIEW

by Ewan Kennedy & Julie Saville The Genesis GV60 is the smallest of three SUVs from Hyundai’s luxury sub-brand behind the mid-sized GV70 and large GV80. Each of the three models get different powertrain choices, the GV80 comes with turbo- petrol or diesel, as does the GV70 but with an EV option added. Our test vehicle, the GV60, is electric only. Genesis GV60 sits on the same platform as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 with potential buyers sure to line up the three siblings alongside each other. Firstly,… Read more

GENESIS COUPE STEPS UP A GEAR

Hyundai’s luxury arm Genesis continues to expand, with the GV80 Coupe Concept. It’s inspired by the X Speedium Coupe Concept that was unveiled last week in New York. Genesis says the concept combines the practicality of an SUV with the dynamism of a sports car. Of perhaps greater interest, the coupe represents a preview of bigger things to come – more emotional, performance-oriented models. Genesis’ rear-wheel-drive platform provides the basis for the GV80 Coupe Concept’s long bonnet and generous proportions. These refined proportions are emphasised by the ‘anti-wedge’ parabolic line…. GENESIS, CHAPTER FIVE – SUV POWER . . . AND GLORY

In Biblical terms, Genesis is how it all began; in the automotive scheme of things, it is similar in that the Hyundai aristocratic family tree’s early sprouts have been joined by an electric powered version of its GV70 sports utility vehicle. On the surface the Electrified GV70 – the fifth and range-topping SUV in the family – gives away little of a shift in method of propulsion, but under the skin it refuses to be ignored, showcasing the latest in luxury and advanced technology in all their glory. The Power… Read more
