GENESIS GV70 REVIEW

It’s still not a household name, at least not in motoring circles, but Genesis is the luxury sub-brand of Hyundai in the same way as Lexus is to Toyota. There are plenty of model choices: two sedans (G70 and G80), three SUVs (GV60, GV70 and GV80) with petrol, diesel and electric powertrains as well as two- and all-wheel drive in the SUVs. GV60 is the first dedicated electric vehicle from Hyundai’s luxury sub-brand Genesis. Launched here in early 2022 it’s the smallest of the three models in the Genesis SUV range behind the mid-sized GV70 and large GV80. Each of the three models get different powertrain choices. Although it’s been on sale in overseas markets since 2016 and in Australia since 2019, the Genesis brand remains largely unknown here. During our week-long road test of the Genesis G70 we regularly had to explain that it was the luxury sub-brand of Hyundai, akin the relationship between Lexus and Toyota. Genesis has unveiled the upgraded range of its GV80 SUV and added a coupe variant to the range. You may well ask how a tall-boxy five-door SUV can merge with a low-slung two-door coupe. The Genesis X Convertible Concept has won the Transportation category at the Good Design Awards 2023, the ninth year in a row that the Korean carmaker has claimed a design award at the prestigious event. GENESIS GV80 30D AWD

Launched here in 2020, GV80 is Genesis’ first and largest SUV in a lineup that now boasts three of them. At just under five metres in length and with a kerb weight of about 2300kg, it’s a large, impressive-looking vehicle. Genesis G80 Electrified is as its name suggests an electrified version of Genesis’ large G80 luxury sedan. But it is a conversion rather than a dedicated EV, evidenced by the blanked-out radiator grille. G80 is popular with hire car drivers because it offers plenty of splash for relatively little cash.
