ELECTRIFYING NEWS FROM RANGE ROVER

Following the recent announcement that from 2020 all new Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles will be electrified comes the news that the first such model will arrive in Australia in April next year. The Range Rover Sport PHEV is the British company’s first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. Badged P400e it combines a 221 kW 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine with an 85 kW electric motor. As the two units reach peak power at different times the maximum combined output is 297 kW. Turbo plus electric guarantees plant of grunt – an… Read more

2017 RANGE ROVER VELAR REVIEW

A fourth member of the Range Rover has just been introduced in Australia. Sitting neatly in the gap between the Range Rover Evoque and the Range Rover Sport, the new Range Rover Velar is priced from $70,662 to $135,762. There’s also a special First Edition launch model priced from $168,250, more about it later. Land Rover chief designer, Gerry McGovern, tell us, “We call the Velar the avantgarde Range Rover. It brings a new dimension of glamour, modernity and elegance to the brand. The Range Rover Velar changes everything.” Naturally… Read more

2017 RANGE ROVER SPORT SVR REVIEW

Range Rover Sport SVR is one of hardest accelerating 4WDs on the planet. Its 405 kW 5.0-litre supercharged V8 has it screaming from zero to 100 km/h in just 4.7 seconds. Note the term ‘4WD’ in this opening par, because this isn’t an SUV, it is a genuine off-road vehicle that can handle harsh conditions that would have many so-called competitors stuck within the first few metres. For example, wheel travel remains identical to the standard Sport, with 260 mm at the front and 272 mm at the rear. Wading… Read more

2017 RANGE ROVER EVOQUE CONVERTIBLE REVIEW

Based on the three-door hardtop version of the Evoque, the convertible has had its entire upper body deleted and replaced by a fabric top. It’s gained a lot of weight – about 275 kilograms depending on the model to add the strength that used to be provided by the sold roof. For comments on the performance see Driving later in this road test. STYLING The Evoque is visually attractive in open-top fashion, though the sides are very tall, reminding us it’s an SUV, not a sportscar. Roof up, it can… Read more

OPEN-TOP RANGE ROVER EVOQUE IS DELIGHTFUL

Range Rover Evoque convertible is an astonishing eye-catcher. Never before have we experienced more interest and comments on a new vehicle under test. With one exception all the comments were favourable, with people loving the style and cheekiness of the concept, and the fact it came as a complete surprise. Only one comment was from someone who didn’t like the Evoque, or perhaps it was the two of driving the open-top Rangie. He said something along the lines of “you silly rich so-and-so’s”. You can fill in different words as… Read more

RANGE ROVER EVOQUE UPGRADE

For the 2016 season the great looking Range Rover Evoque has received a revised body design that’s now offered in two frontal styles; an all-new ‘Ingenium’ turbo-diesel engine; and full-LED adaptive headlamps in some models. Probably most important to many buyers is the fitment of an updated infotainment system in a revised interior that shares many design cues with the much more expensive Range Rover Sport. STYLING When I first saw the concept that would later become the Range Rover Evoque at a Geneva Motor Show my comment to one… Read more

2015 RANGE ROVER EVOQUE DYNAMIC COUPE REVIEW

It’s a bit of a cliche, but there’s no denying that if you can design a car with just three strokes of the pencil, it can’t help but look good. The Range Rover Evoque Coupe is just such a thing. As with many niche vehicles released by makers with a brand history as affectionately regarded as Range Rover’s, the car dropped to howls of mud-covered, lamb-chop wearing aficionados moaning about the Toorak Tractor association that Victoria Beckham brought, the selling-out to the SUV fad and the fact that it wasn’t… Read more

LITTLE RANGE ROVER EVOKES A RADICAL TRADITION

The Range Rover set a new premium style for four-wheel drive wagons when it first was launched 44 years ago. Now its small brother, the Range Rover Evoque could be said to have changed the face of the sports utility vehicle when it first appeared three years ago. With its squat stance, sloping roofline and edgy character, it led to the coining of the landmark cross-coupe moniker and was cause for comment, for and against, wherever it appeared. The Evoque won many accolades from those in the automotive media, as… Read more

RANGE ROVER SPORT IS SPORTIER THAN EVER

Like a cross between an Evoque and a full-sized Range Rover the all-new Range Rover Sport looks just right

Range Rover Sport sometimes confuses people. It’s not a standard Range Rover with ‘Sport’ badges and a firmed up suspension and some go-faster bits, rather it’s a model in its own right. Like big brother Range Rover the all-new Range Rover Sport has been on a serious diet. Compared with the previous generation Sport the new one is as much as 420 kg lighter, thanks to the extensive use of aluminium in both the body and suspension. Also to clever computer design work that minimises the amount of material required… Read more
