2019 AUDI A7 SPORTBACK LAUNCH

Audi A7 Sportback generation two has arrived in Australia, but at this stage only the topline model, the 55 TFSI is here. It’s the subject of this review and we have done extensive test drives of several cars. Audi A7 has long been one of our style favourites and it was great that Audi brought chief designer Andreas Koglin to Australia for a detailed explanation as to how he achieved the shape. (He also gave we journos some ideas on how to sketch cars on paper. Mine looked only marginally… Read more

A3 2004 – 2017

2005 Audi A3 Sportback

Upmarket German Audi was criticised by some when it chose to add a small, relatively low-cost model to its range in 1996. Critics said the new Audi A3 would devalue the prestige image. They were proven wrong because Audi used quality materials, comfort and high levels of driving ability to its small car. In the intervening years Audi has introduced an even smaller model, the A1, and fellow German makers BMW and Mercedes have successfully introduced similar sized cars. First generation Audi A3s are getting on in years so in… Read more

AUDI SPORT DAY AT ‘THE BEND’

In the world of ultra long distance motor racing Denmark’s Tom Kristensen is a legend. Driving in the famed LeMans 24-hour – think four-and-a-half Bathurst 1000s back to back – Kristensen has finished 15 times, and been on the podium 15 times. For nine of these races he and his team-mates were on the top spot of the podium. In an eerie similarity to Kristensen’s nine LeMans wins, Australian racing legend Peter Brock took out nine Bathurst victories. Despite several further attempts neither of these brilliant drivers managed to get… Read more

AUDI RS4 AVANT

Turbochargers are the way to go if you need to meet ever tightening emission regulations and still want plenty of power and torque. So the biggest change in this fourth generation RS4 Avant lies under the bonnet where the previous 4.2-litre naturally-aspirated V8 has been replaced by a biturbo 2.9-litre V6. STYLING The Audi single-frame grille is wider and flatter than before and of course has the honeycomb structure typical of what’s a trademark of the RS series. The latest RS4 Avant is longer (by 62 mm) and wider (by… Read more

STUNNING NEW AUDI A8

The all-new fourth-generation of the Audi A8 flagship is now on sale in Australia. It’s a large sedan – or should that be saloon? The German machine has handsome lines that give it a real presence on the road as evidenced by the number of people who looked it over while we drove it out of Sydney on the launch program. We use the word handsome as it has relatively conservative lines – as is the norm in any of the topline German prestige machines. No flashy lines because these… Read more

NEW RS4 AVANT CONTINUES AUDI’S PERFORMANCE WAGON TRADITION

Audi has released the latest version of its RS4 Avant, a high-performance sporty Euro wagon with a heritage that goes back almost 25 years to the Audi RS2 Avant of 1994. The biggest change in this fourth generation RS4 Avant lies under the bonnet where the previous 4.2-litre naturally-aspirated V8 engine has been replaced by a biturbo 2.9-litre V6. The turbocharged engine matches the V8’s 331 kW of power but picks up an extra 170 Nm of torque to reach a neck-snapping 600 Nm from just 1900 rpm, compared with… Read more

NEW AUDI STAR SINGS FROM A DIFFERENT SONG SHEET

Vocally speaking, if the outgoing Audi RS 5 was a booming baritone, the latest version of the iconic sports coupe is a cocky, if at times shrill, tenor and, as has been suggested, maybe not to everyone’s liking. Blame the substitution of the sonorous sound of the ‘old’ V8 with a new-generation star-in-the-making twin-turbo V6 that works in a higher register. Traditionally, baritones can be packing a bit of beef, unlike tenors who, because they get the girl, are usually trim, taut and terrific. The same can be said about… Read more

2018 AUDI A5 CABRIOLET REVIEW

A few months ago we drove a couple of Audi A5 Cabriolets with the their roofs open on a wet, windy wintery day in Adelaide – and were pleased to find the combination of heated seats, warm air being blown onto the back of our necks and an air blocker behind the front seats made life significantly more comfortable than expected. By way of sharp contrast we’ve just spent a most pleasant week at the wheel of an A5 Cabriolet in our home area on the Gold Coast, plenty of… Read more
