NEW CAR SALES UP IN 2022 DESPITE SUPPLY ISSUES

The Federal Chamber Of Automotive Industries (FCAI) has released the final Australian motor vehicle sales figures for 2022. Despite demand exceeding supply as a result of the usual suspects, COVID-19 and the war in Ukraine, the Australian automotive market still recorded sales of 1,081,429 new vehicles – an increase of 3% over 2021 sales. For the 20th straight year Toyota was Australia’s top selling car brand with 231,050 units, an increase of 3.3%. Although Mazda sales declined by 5.3% it remained in clear second place with 95,718 sales, with Kia… Read more

CHINESE CHECKERS – THE PLAYERS AND STAYERS

It’s been more than a decade since the launch of the first Chinese-branded car in Australia. That vehicle was of course the first Great Wall ute way back in 2009, pitched at bang-for-your-buck tradies. Since then, a number of Chinese brands have come and gone, but three manufacturers stand out as the stickarounds. They are the aforementioned Great Wall, as well as LDV which launched here in 2014 and MG which joined the fray quite late in proceedings in 2017. Last year 1,049,831 new vehicles were sold in Australia. With… Read more

MG ZS PURE ELECTRIC VEHICLE

We really do enjoy driving pure electric cars, that is ones without any assistance from other power sources such as petrol or diesel. So, when the MG ZS EV was updated in September with increased driving range and a few minor changes, it was a good excuse to borrow one for a week. Our test vehicle was the entry level ZS EV Excite, priced from $44,990 driveaway. The premium Essence model is $48,990 driveaway. These prices are pretty low for pure electric vehicles, but that’s because they have smaller… Read more

MG Y-TYPE

This sports saloon version of the MG, first released in 1947, was known affectionately as the ‘Y’ by MG afficionados. The model YA stayed in production until 1951 and 6158 cars were produced and then it was replaced by the YB in 1952. The YB was only produced for a couple of years and it was discontinued in 1953 with a production run of 1201 cars. Little external changes were made to the YB but it did get twin leading-shoe brakes and hypoid rear axles. The Y-type was powered by… Read more

MG HS +EV

Can it really be four years since I last drove an MG? It was the compact ZS SUV and being quite new back then, there was quite a bit of interest in the car. Once renowned for its two-seat open-topped sports cars, MG is now owned by the huge Chinese state-owned SAIC Group and produces two SUVs and a cheapo hatch — the HS, ZS and MG3. Much of the current interest stems from the fact the two SUVs are offered with electrified powertrains: HS is a plug-in hybrid while… Read more

HS +EV IS MG’S FIRST PLUG-IN HYBRID

The ongoing growth in Australian sales of MG vehicles continues to gather pace with the Chinese importer now sitting in seventh place of 2022 year-to-date sales at the end of April. The company’s success is all the more impressive given that there are only three models in its range, the MG3 hatchback, ZS small SUV and HS mid-sized SUV. The two SUVs are offered with different levels of electrification, the ZS is fully electric while the HS is a plug-in hybrid. Both come with the choice of Excite and Essence… Read more

MG IN POSITION FOR POWER PLAY

Switched-on advocates of renewable energy generally agree that the ‘crossover point’ when the cost of producing electric cars becomes the same as that of internal combustion engine vehicles will be 2026 . . . maybe earlier. In the meantime, automobile manufacturers repeatedly put their money where their mouth is with full EVs and fossil fuel / electric hybrids. One such maker is MG, the erstwhile British sports car icon now in the hands of the Chinese, and powering. Indeed, MG is producing both hybrid and straight electric cars, with the… Read more

EVs TAKING ON THE TYRANNY OF DISTANCE (MG ZS EV)

In his 1967 book, The Tyranny of Distance: How Distance Shaped Australia’s History, Geoffrey Blainey shone a light on this country’s geographical remoteness from the centre of the British Empire. The world’s largest island continent since has had its own problems with isolation of communities, which lately has come into sharp focus through the introduction of electric vehicles. It’s a long way from the ubiquitous ‘fill ‘er up’ fuel station to the plug-in bowser of the widely spread charge point, but things are rapidly changing, with car battery efficiency charging… Read more

MGB

With sales of the Chinese-sourced MG models booming it’s a good opportunity to look back at the iconic British sportcars that established the marque, and in particular the most popular of all, the MGB. The MGB was significant mainly because it was the archetypal cheap sportscar, rapid without being really fast in standard form, simple to maintain, and endowed with enduring good looks. At first only a two-seater open sports version was available, but in 1965 the very elegant MGB GT hatchback derivative was released. It was unfortunate that the… Read more
