TOUGHER THAN EVER – NEW MERCEDES G-CLASS

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is the real deal. Forget SUVs, SAVs, SATs, crossovers, soft roaders and a variety of other vehicles people buy because they want to be seen at the wheel of a Tough, or should that be Tuff? vehicle. The Merc G-Class is in a lightly populated class of large, serious, ladder-frame working vehicles. The current model dates back to the late 1970s, with several updates in the meantime so a new model is long overdue – and is on its way. Mercedes is gradually passing information to the… Read more

MERCEDES-BENZ A-CLASS 2013 – 2016

By EWAN KENNEDY, Marque Motoring CAPTION: A. B. C. 2016 Mercedes-Benz A250 BODY COPY When Mercedes-Benz launched the A-Class in 1997 it was a stubby little car deliberately made to be shorter than any conventional four-door car. No big deal in Australia, but huge in Europe where a car with a length 100 mm less than anything else could make the difference between finding a parking spot in a big city or not. Which sounds weird to Aussies, but if you’ve ever looked at cars crammed bumper-to-bumper on Parisian streets… Read more

MERCEDES CARS BEING TAUGHT TO DRIVE THE AUSSIE WAY

Just about everyone I speak to wants to discuss self driving cars. Mercedes-Benz is one of the leaders in this field and its engineers and a special S-Class have just been flown Downunder from Stuttgart to look at some problems unique to our country. To start with there are the infamous Melbourne hook-turns that mystify interstate drivers. I know of some who simply refuse to drive in that city as the hooks scare them. Turning right from the left of the left-hand lane is something the autonomous Mercs will need… Read more

MERCEDES UTES – YES, UTES

The eagerly awaited, though somewhat surprising, Mercedes-Benz X-Class ute is getting closer to Australia by the day. With the announcement of pricing – from $45,450 for a manual cab-chassis, to $64,500 for a luxurious dual-cab – the working Benz will compete with the top end of utes from more traditional sources. Or to be more precise, the top end of traditional utes with a stack of extras – because you will have to pay about $5000 to $15,000 extra for the Merc comparing like for like. Why is Merc selling… Read more

2018 MERCEDES S-CLASS FIRST DETAILS

New Mercedes-Benz S-Class and Mercedes-Maybach models are on ships headed for Australia as we write. As befits the prestigious German marque the topline models both are crammed with the latest high-tech features. When Maybachs were launched in 2002 sales very slow, chiefly due to extremely high prices, but also because very few people knew the name. Hence the decision to call the new topline models in the Mercedes S-Class range the Mercedes-Maybach. They have features not available in even the most expensive Mercedes S-Class models. Equipment offered on S-Class models… Read more

VISION MERCEDES-MAYBACH 6 CABRIOLET

Pebble Beach, California, USA hosts an annual gathering of the most magnificent classic cars on the planet. The final event of this year’s Concours d’Elegance was the unveiling by Mercedes-Benz of its astonishingly beautiful concept car, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet. Is this the most gorgeous car you’ve ever seen? That was the question that flashed around the world the moment the concept was unveiled. A huge car – it’s almost six metres long and over two metres wide – the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet is a reminder of the… Read more

FIRST DRIVE: MERCEDES E-CLASS COUPES

Last week we published technical and equipment details of the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class coupe, but the importer asked us not to give driving impressions straight away. That was to allow others who drove the cars in the days that followed our launch the chance to all get into print on the same day. Mercedes chose a fascinating drive route to the Daylesford area of Victoria, using minor roads where possible. The idea was to display the new coupe on the sort of trip likely to be undertaken by couples on… Read more

2017 MERCEDES-BENZ E-CLASS COUPE LAUNCHED

Mercedes-Benz’s new E-Class coupe range is larger than before and is almost a full four-seater rather than a two-plus-two as in previous generations. This added usability hasn’t spoiled its style, though. The low, sleek proportions work well, it has a low grille, long bonnet with power domes, and the cabin sits further back. All four side windows are frameless and there is no B-pillar. New E-Class coupe is 123 mm longer, 74 mm wider, and sits on a 113 mm longer wheelbase. Rear legroom up by 74 mm and shoulder… Read more

2017 MERCEDES-AMG C 43 COUPE

Australians are the biggest buyers of Mercedes-AMG cars in the world as a percentage of all Mercedes-Benz sales. Sales are going to rise even more with the introduction of an entry-level model to the C-Class AMG variants. While most people may not see $100,000 as being ‘entry-level’ the latest AMG C 43 kicks in at only a few dollars more than that, with the C 43 which has been our most enjoyable ride this week. The range starts with the sedan at $101,900, with our road test coupe having a… Read more

2017 MERCEDES-BENZ E220D REVIEW

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class has long been that middle child unable to truly hog the spotlight despite its long list of favourable talents. With the sublime S-Class as a confident older sibling and the precocious headline-grabbing C-Class as a younger, you have to jump pretty high to get noticed. Now, however, repositioned as the core of the brand and charged with taking the Mercedes-Benz tradition of style, comfort and top-class innovations into the future, the E-Class is taking centre stage. We put the E220d, which starts at $92,900, to the family… Read more
