TOYOTA COROLLA 1.8 ZR HYBRID HATCH

Finished in black over silver, Toyota’s ZR Corolla looks more eye-catching than ever. In the past few years the company has been able to transform the image of the car from staid and conservative into something much more sporty that has younger buyer appeal — at least that’s the plan. Flanking the hatch is the more traditional sedan for mums and dads and rally bred, three- door, all-wheel drive GR hot hatch at the other end of the scale for the boy racers (and boy racers at heart). Each grade… Read more

A CASE OF CARRY ON, COROLLA

When the first Corolla made landfall in Australia in 1966, few people would have predicted half a century later the tiny vehicle, through sedan, hatch and wagon, becoming the world’s most popular car. Former Toyota Australia executive Rex Gilham, one of the men responsible for bringing Corollas Down Under says just 15 cars were in the first shipment in November 1966, the first vehicles to be exported from Japan. These went on sale in 1967. A year later, first locally produced models left Australian Motor Industries’ plant in Port… Read more

TOYOTA GR COROLLA MORIZO

Imagine paying $80,000 for a Corolla and finding it doesn’t have a back seat. That’s the big ask for Toyota’s leaner, meaner GR Corolla Morizo Edition, only 25 of which will be offered for sale here in Australia. Toyota says it has taken performance to a whole new level with the arrival of the strictly limited Morizo Edition, an even more focused version of the acclaimed GR Corolla. The removal of the rear seats represents just one of the many weight-saving measures applied, reducing the kerb weight of the car… Read more

TOYOTA COROLLA GR

Before my review of the new Toyota Corolla GR, I would like to give you my own experiences of a Corolla. Way back when I bought one in 1971, I didn’t have any connection with the motoring business but chose it because it looked better than others in the class – which is as good a reason as any I reckon… I didn’t have a family then, but three children arrived over the following six years. All came home as tiny babies in the Corolla. As they grew up there… Read more

IT’S ENOUGH TO MAKE A COROLLA CROSS

What do you get when you turn the world’s biggest selling car into an SUV? In the case of the Toyota Corolla, you get the Corolla Cross and a whole lot more sales, at least that’s the plan. But it’s not the Corolla’s first rodeo. Back in 1988 there was a 4WD version of the Corolla station wagon, but buyers weren’t so fixated on 4WDs 30 years ago — so you might not remember. Sold from 1988 to 1992 the Corolla 4WD boasted a 1.6-litre four cylinder engine, manual or… Read more
