2017 HOLDEN COLORADO 4X4 REVIEW

The Australian love affair with dual-cab utes shows no sign of losing that fresh flush of romance with the vehicle’s ability to service both work and family commitments a major drawcard. The segment is highly competitive filled with all manner of temptations including utes that look like utes but drives like cars (well, almost), utes that have such a premium feel you couldn’t imagine getting it dusty, utes that are better off-road, those that are better on road, utes that can haul heavy trailers, others that would battle with an… Read more

2017 HOLDEN TAKES US TO THE FUTURE OF SUVS

Holden Equinox has a semi-sleek visual appearance at the rear that hides what is a large cargo compartment

There’s no secret that Australians steadily lost interest in large family sedans and station wagons over the past five to ten years. To the extent that slow sales meant the closing of the Ford Australia factory and the impending shutdown of GM-Holden and Toyota factories over the next few months. Buyers deserting traditional family sixes in favour of various types of SUVs meant that Holden began to look closely at various alternatives. Everything from small front-drive tall hatches to full on 4WDs. We’ve just spent a delightful day in the… Read more

2018 COMMODORE VXR REVEALED

Late last year Holden released initial details of the fully-imported NG (Next Generation) Commodore ahead of its Australian launch in early 2018. In an interesting move, journalists have been provided with an extensive array of details much of them under strict embargo. It comes as no surprise that the big emphasis of the latest release is on the hot Commodore VXR flagship. It will come with a V6 engine putting out 235 kilowatts of power and 381 Newton metres of torque through a nine-speed automatic transmission to an all-wheel-drive system…. Read more

NG COMMODORE SUPERCAR RACER REVEALED

Holden Holden has revealed the first official concept images of the next generation (NG) Commodore race car that will be introduced into the Supercars Championship in 2018. At this stage it’s only a computer-generated image by GM Design Australia Exterior Design Manager Peter Hughes. The Supercars version of the NG Commodore is currently undergoing a design and development process in partnership between Holden and its official factory racing team, Triple Eight Race Engineering. The design work includes simulation and aerodynamic evaluation using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling. In an interesting… Read more

THE END OF THE LION FOR ICONIC AUSSIE UTE

The clock is counting down not only the end of Australian-made Holden cars but also on one of our nation’s most iconic vehicles, the trusty (occasionally rusty according to the lyrics of a popular Aussie Christmas song) Holden Ute. The first ever Ute, the Holden Utility 51-2016 to give it it’s full name, was launched in 1951 and apart from the period from 1984 and 1990 (from the last WB Commercial to the first VN Commodore variant) there’s been a passenger car-based light commercial Holden on sale here ever since…. THAT’S NOT AN SUV …

1953 FJ Holden panel van

To paraphrase old mate Crocodile Dundee, “That’s not an SUV … this is an SUV!” Early in 2017 SUV sales in Australia overtook those of passenger cars. This doesn’t make sense to me because it’s blindingly obvious that many so-called SUVs are nothing but tall hatchbacks. I decided to research the origin of SUVs in Australia and was stunned and delighted to find that the first ever Australian designed and built SUV was … wait for it … the FJ Holden. Yep, the good old FJ panel van can be… Read more

HOLDEN COMMODORE 2006 – 2015

2006 Holden Commodore SV6

The end is nigh for the Australian built Holden Commodore, with the factory closing down in October. The nameplate will continue, albeit on a slightly smaller imported model made by Opel in Europe. What does this mean for the Aussie Commodore, and should you rush in and buy one now? Our crystal ball is pretty murky looking, but the light that is showing through suggests that V8s, particularly special editions, may become a little more valuable, or at least depreciate at a lower rate. Manuals may do better than autos…. Read more

2017 HOLDEN TRAILBLAZER LTZ

Holden made a fair bit of fuss about the new Trailblazer when the model made its appearance on these shores late last year. Far from just being an update of the Colorado 7, the seven-seater was touted as the perfect companion for a family who loved adventure, a heady mix of space, comfort, off-road prowess and on-road manners. Sceptics dismissed the marketing script as just that, nothing more than a ploy to dress up a name change as something much grander than it was. That is hardly surprising given the… Read more

‘WIZARDS OF OZ’ CAST SPELL ON COLORADO

The upgraded Colorado is the shape of things to come for Holden. The ‘Wizards of Oz’ joined their Brazilian counterparts and Thai manufacturing technicians to come up with a vehicle that the maker says is ideal for Australia’s driving conditions. “The variety of roads in Australia and the ways Australians use trucks means the 2017 Colorado has to be versatile enough to handle everything thrown at it,” says Holden’s Lead Development Engineer, Amelinda Watt. “We know customers like to drive their Colorado off-road or on unsealed roads, but we also… Read more

SHAPELY ASTRA WEIGHS IN WITH AUSSIE INGENUITY

It’s no secret that when it comes to performance and low fuel consumption and emissions in cars, weight is the enemy. So it was with the development of the new Holden Astra hatchback, which is an impressive 140 kg lighter than the previous model, despite the take-up of more kit. Australia took the Astra into its heart when first launched here in 1996. Since then, motorists’ feelings for the small Holden, with its European looks and dynamics have not waned. Designers and engineers were given a clean sheet by Opel… Read more
