Psst . . . Wanna buy an EV? A cheap EV?

At the moment you can get your hands on a new Jaecoo J5 for as little as $36,990.

That’s a driveaway price and includes on-road costs and a free upgrade to premium paint.

It’s powered by a single electric motor that delivers 155kW of power and 288Nm of torque, with drive to the front wheels.

The dash from 0-100km/h takes 7.7 seconds and with claimed energy consumption of  14.3 Wh/100km, it has a range from a single charge of 402km (WLTP).

Charging using a commercial DC fast charger adds 30-80 per cent in as little as 28 minutes.

Inside, the cabin is trimmed in pet-friendly synthetic leather made of a special silicone-based material, which is antibacterial and wear-resistant.

The range will expand later in the year with the arrival of petrol and hybrid variants.
