It has only been on the market for a short time, but given the rapid advances being made in electric vehicles it’s no surprise that the Hyundai IONIQ Electric has received major changes for 2020.
These are greatest in its pure electric format where it has not only enhanced performance but a greatly extended 311km all-electric range, when measured on the official WLTP standard. The pure electric now has a more powerful 100kW synchronous motor, and 100kW DC fast-charging capability.
Hyundai’s first dedicated eco vehicle is sold with a choice of three electrified powertrains – Electric, Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid – in a refined compact five-door fastback package.
IONIQ Plug-in Hybrid offers electric-only trips up to 63 kilometres.
The 2020 IONIQ Hybrid, with its petrol/electric hybrid system achieve a 3.4L/100km fuel usage when measured on the Australasian ADR 81/02 combined cycle. (Confusingly, not the WLTP test cycle.)
Perhaps most important to local drivers is that the IONIQ benefits from a refreshed Australian chassis tune. We are told is delivers a supple, refined ride and a consistent drive experience. We will soon road test an IONIC and report on our findings.
Styling changes include redesigned front and rear lighting, front grilles and new alloy wheels. Inside the 2020 IONIQ features a new dashboard with premium soft-touch finishes and ambient lighting in the Premium and Electric versions.
A new, tablet-style multimedia unit on a 10.25-inch screen gives access to satellite navigation multimedia system. It has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity.
Hyundai’s extensive SmartSense safety suite continues in 2020 IONIQ, now with the standard inclusion of High Beam Assist and an upgraded Driver Attention Warning system featuring Leading Vehicle Departure Alert.
