MERCEDES-BENZ E-CLASS CABRIOLET

Mercedes-Benz has improved its E-Class range with a facelift and increased standard equipment. Most importantly in the eyes of many potential buyers, they have significantly improved engines, including a sensational new powerplant tagged as the ‘400’ – more about it later. Safety has been significantly upgraded as Mercedes continues to be in the forefront in this field, as it has for many decades. STYLING Though the profile of the superseded E-Class cabriolet and coupe worked well, the frontal styling was hampered by having too many awkward shut-lines. The new look… Read more

MERCEDES-BENZ E63 S

The AMG E63 S replaces two former models available in Australia: the E63 and the E63 Performance Pack. These variants had respective outputs of 386 kW and 410 kW, so at 430 kW the uprated E63 S blitzes both in power from the same 5.5-litre twin-turbocharged V8. Power is put to the rear wheels – Aussie AMG fanatics would have it no other way – via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission manufactured by Mercedes-Benz.    AMG have mastered the art of understatement. This looks like a gentleman’s car. Yes, there are… Read more

NEW ENGINES, MORE STYLE FOR MERCEDES E-CLASS

A few months ago we had the pleasure of driving the latest versions of the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class cabriolet and coupe in their home country of Germany as part of the international launch. Now the cars have reached us downunder and we have driven them here. We are pleased to report that the sporty Mercs work as well here as in Europe. Tyre noise on coarse-chip surfaces doesn’t intrude to any real extent, even in the cabriolet when the roof is open. Similarly big bumps on roads that have seen… Read more

MERCEDES DIESEL HYBRID IS A FIRST FOR AUSTRALIA

Mercedes-Benz has been significantly reducing emissions and fuel consumption and emissions in all its vehicles for many years. Now the latest ultra-clean model has arrived in Australia, and the Mercedes E 300 Hybrid is the best of them all. This is the first car in Australia to combine electric hybrid technology with a diesel engine. At least one other maker sells diesel-electric hybrids in Europe, but their steering wheels are on the wrong side for Australia. To its great credit Mercedes-Benz Australia Pacific fought long and hard for this advanced… Read more

MERCEDES-BENZ E-CLASS COUPE AND CABRIOLET

Revised shape of the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class coupe and cabriolet work exceptionally well

Mercedes has carried out an extensive redesign of its mid-sized E-Class coupe and cabriolet and at the same time has introduced an impressive all-new turbocharged V6 engine. Though the overall shape of the about to be superseded E-Class was very good, the frontal appearance was regarded as being overly complex by many critics. The new look is significantly neater and more attractive. We spent some time chatting to the chief designer, Robert Lesnik, during the global media launch in Germany and Denmark, where he explained how he had done this… Read more

Mercedes-Benz has given its E-Class a facelift together with a combination of price reductions and extra equipment additions that combine to improve their value, according to Benz, from $7000 to $23,000 depending on the model. Earlier this year we were able to preview the coupe and cabriolet versions of the E-Class models in their home territory. They’ll be arriving here late in the year but have been preceded by the more mainstream sedan and wagon variants. More mainstream they may be but in terms of styling the four and five-door… Read more

MERCEDES GLA – FINALLY AN SUV FROM THE GERMAN GIANT

Sleek lines of the Mercedes GLA concept SUV are likely to be translated into reality

If you wanted to bring a tear to the eyes of anyone at Mercedes-Benz Australia during the last few years all you had to do was ask about their range of compact SUVs – because there was no such thing as a compact Mercedes SUV. Arch rivals Audi and BMW were making big sales and equally big dollars by selling their Q3 and X1 and X3 respectively, but Mercedes had nothing smaller than the family-sized M-Class to sell. In Australia that is, because Mercedes-Benz has been making a compact SUV… Read more

MERCEDES M-CLASS 1998 – 2012

2012 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

Britain’s Range Rover had the luxury 4WD market all to itself for many years until the Germans finally entered the arena. Led by the M-Class, Mercedes’ first luxury SUV, this market segment has become highly competitive. There are now also entrants from Mercedes’ biggest rivals, BMW and Audi. Mercedes-Benz M-Class arrived in Australia in September 1997 and has sold well since then thanks to a combination of image, price (more about this in a moment) and genuine 4WD ability. While the M-Class is used by most owners as a luxury… Read more
