BMW X3 GETS STYLING UPGRADES

For the 2022 season the BMW X3 sports activity vehicle has a facelift to give it a sportier look. The BMW kidney grille now has a single-piece frame. Below the headlights, vertical air intakes arranged in a triangular interpretation frame the front bumper. The BMW X3 xDrive30e also bears an “electrified by i” emblem on the front guards and blue ring sits around all the BMW logos, including those on the wheels. The rear, black borders give the lights a more precise appearance, while the narrower light graphic now includes… Read more

SECOND GENERATION BMW 4 SERIES GRAN COUPÉ

BMW Australia will introduce the second generation 4 Series Gran Coupé to the Australian market at a date yet to be announced, other than it’s towards the end of the year. Though it has four doors BMW tells us it can be classed as a coupé due to its sleek shape. This is quite a large vehicle with a length of 4,783 millimetres, 1,852mm in width and 1,442mm in height. It’s said it can carry five adults in comfort. We will have to verify, or otherwise, when we get to… Read more

DIESEL SEDATE? NOT THIS BMW EXECUTIVE SEDAN

Following the recent off-the-planet design detour by certain BMWs, the car maker is back to Earth with its 5 Series Life Cycle Impulse upgrade. Not that the facelifted seventh generation model is out of date or boring. It’s just that, well, it’s a BMW, swapping the out-there nose straight out of the Cyrano de Bergerac playbook, Proboscis: the long version, for return to the hallmark tucked-in twin kidney grille. And the car that pointed the way in my case was the 530d, the lone diesel among a range of powertrains… Read more

BMW 3.0 CSL

The CSL was a lightweight version of BMW’s flagship six-cylinder 2800/3.0 CS coupes, although the shape harks back to the 1965 2000 CS. It was built especially to allow the car to meet the requirements needed for European Touring Car Group 2 racing. The first CSLs, announced in May 1971, were specially modified so as to become 217km/h road racers with thinner body panels, no front bumper, fibreglass rear bumper, racing latches on the bonnet, manual winding side windows made from plexiglas, and of course the alloy-skinned opening panels, all… Read more

BMW 7 SERIES 2009 – 2020

BMW 7 Series are large saloons aimed at comfortable cruising in all conditions and are particularly impressive covering huge distances on unrestricted sections of autobahn in Germany. Sadly, the laws of physics seem to be different in Australia and the authorities here tell us that if we drive at more than 110 km/h the big Bimmer will probably crash. Sad, isn’t it? In this Used Car Checkout we are looking at models than e the F01 and F02 series sold here from March 2009. The F01 has a rather conservative… Read more

BMW SENDS IN THE ‘CLOWN’ WITH ITS TOP-BILLING COUPE

In the circus that is modern car design, the BMW 4 Series Coupe could well be cast as the clown, complete with a ‘red nose’ and big boots. The maker says it has conceived the new Coupe to stand on its own two feet away from its 4 Series cousins. And to say the BMW M440i xDrive does is an understatement, with a flashy front end that refuses to be ignored. And this is not only reflected in its controversial appearance. In dimensions, too, the new model shifts further away… Read more

BMW 5 SERIES 2010 – 2019

BMW 5 Series is a prestige sold as a midsize sedan or station wagon. It leans in the sporting direction in the endless compromise between sports and luxury. Handling is brilliant due to the near-perfect weight distribution that’s the result of rear-wheel drive and the positioning of the engine well back under the bonnet. Yet this handling is achieved without upsetting comfort to any real extent. Some bad Australian roads may catch out the suspension out, but it generally makes light work of rough surfaces. Big distances can be covered… Read more

BMW 507 SPORTS

Whilst BMW is today considered to be one of the finest marques, this was not always the case. In the 1920s BMW made aero engines and motorcycles before beginning licensed production of the Austin Seven in 1929. The company’s original design arrived in 1934 and two years later it established its credentials with the 328, which was probably the best all-round sports car of the day. After World War II the firm’s major plant in East Germany was nationalised Aand eventually made the unloved Wartburgs. The Munich factory in West… Read more

BMW iX MODELS: INITIAL DETAILS

The first-ever BMW iX, now in its final phase of development, will arrive in Australia in the fourth quarter this year. Two models will be imported, the iX xDrive40 and BMW iX xDrive50. BMW tells us, “Development and production of the BMW iX follow an all-encompassing approach to sustainability involving compliance with strict environmental and social standards in the extraction of raw materials, as well as the use of electricity from renewable sources and a high proportion of recycled materials.” On both models there’s one electric motor on the front… Read more

BMW 502

In July 1954 Germany’s first post-WWII car and BMW’s first V8 car – the 502 – was introduced. In using the same body as the 501, at first it was only recognisable from the outside by its extra chrome trim below the belt line, a V8 emblem on the boot lid and built-in foglights in its lower front guards. In late 1955 it got a wraparound rear window, but several months before this the 501 came out also with a V8 engine, no side chrome strips and a smaller rear… Read more
