It only seems like a few years back that a brilliant new kid on the Australian racing car block arrived – and was promptly nicknamed The Kid. Yet it was 20 years ago that Craig Lowndes first grabbed our attention.
His infectious smile, total modesty and willingness to chat to anyone, anywhere, anytime made him a household name – and not just with car racing enthusiasts.
To celebrate Lowndes’ 20 years in top level V8 racing Holden has, somewhat cheekily, announced it is building a Craig Lowndes SS V Special Edition Commodore, “celebrating 20 years of Craig Lowndes in V8 Supercars.”
I say ‘cheekily‘ because Craig spent quite a few years driving another make of V8 Supercar before moving into a Commodore. I won’t reveal the name of the other maker in this Holden story – other than to say it begins with an ‘F‘ ends with a d’‘ and has four letters.
Holden is keeping details of the Craig Lowndes SS V Special Edition Commodore secret at this stage, saying that pricing and specification to be released next month, October.
What we are being told at this stage is that every Craig Lowndes SS V Special Edition Commodore will be hand-finished and individually numbered by trained technicians at the Holden plant in Adelaide.
Just as exciting as owning the Lowndes car is that each buyer will receive exclusive, ‘money-can’t-buy’ experiences. These include a framed certificate of authenticity with build plate, a Red Bull Racing private function and tour hosted by Craig. As well as two general admission tickets to the customers’ local 2015 V8 Supercar race, topped of with a Red Bull Racing pit tour.
Craig Lowndes said that after a 20-year career it was a huge honour to have Holden develop this special tribute model. “I’ve had a lot of success on the racetrack behind the wheel of Commodores,” he told us, “and to celebrate that with this special road-going version is a great privilege. I know fans and customers all over the country are going to love it.”
Holden dealers are now taking pre-orders on this very special edition Commodore.
Over a brilliant 20-year career Lowndes has compiled a list of unsurpassed achievements including five Bathurst 1000 titles, three Australian Touring Car Championships and a record-breaking 97 ATCC / V8 Supercars Championship wins.
