LAND ROVER FREELANDER 2007 – 2015

Though it’s generally used only as a suburban wagon, Land Rover’s Freelander is capable of tackling mild to moderate bush, beach and desert conditions that would strand just about everything else in its class. Which is hardly surprising as it comes from the company that gives us everything from the down-and-dirty Land Rover Defender to the highly competent (and very expensive) Range Rover. Freelander first went on sale here early in 1998 making it arguably the first upmarket compact SUV, several years ahead of the big-name Germans. These originals were… Read more

RANGE ROVER VELAR HSE P400 MHEV

Wow. It’s been more than four years since we last drove Range Rover’s Velar and not much has changed. Named the most beautiful car in the world in 2018, the name Velar comes from a series of pre-production Range Rovers in 1969. They’ve just updated the range with the addition of a plug-in hybrid that adds 53km of electric-only range — but other than that it all looks familiar. In terms of size, Velar sits between Evoque and Sport, and shares a platform with cousin the Jaguar F-Pace. Interestingly, although… Read more

LAND ROVER DEFENDER 90 SE P400

Let’s get something straight. Land Rover’s Defender maybe an icon, but as for legendary — well, they weren’t very reliable. In this country, if you wanted to head off the beaten track, you got a Land Cruiser, preferably the workhorse version with its skinny tyres, part-time 4×4 and mechanical diff locks – with a bullbar and snorkel for good measure. It’s the car you invariably find parked in sheds on farms across the land. Land Rover calls this new car a Defender, but it doesn’t look or feel much like… Read more

A RIGHT ROYAL ROVER

The British royal family has a long history with Land Rover vehicles, regularly seen moving around in the latest Range Rover. That tradition goes back to 1953 when a Land Rover Series I was registered under registration number ‘NXN 1’, and dispatched to Stratstone in London on July 3, 1953. Queen Elizabeth II then had the car transported to the Scottish Balmoral Estate in 1954, where it was used exclusively by Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip, the Queen Mother and the current King Charles. In 1966, the Land Rover was sold… Read more

LONG WHEELBASE 130 RETURNS TO THE LAND ROVER DEFENDER RANGE

After a gap of nearly six years Land Rover has returned the long-wheelbase 130 version to the Defender range alongside the shorter 110 and 90 models. As has been the long- standing tradition the numbers refer to the vehicles’ approximate wheelbase lengths in inches. At just under 5.4 metres in length the 130 is an eight-seater in 2-3-3 format with the second and third rows raised slightly above each other. This together with large windows and twin sunroofs contribute to an airy interior and excellent visibility. There are a number… Read more

JAGUAR LAND ROVER IS DEVELOPING A PROTOTYPE HYDROGEN FUEL CELL ELECTRIC VEHICLE

Jaguar Land Rover is developing a prototype hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) based on the new Land Rover Defender, with testing scheduled to begin this year. The FCEV concept is part of Jaguar Land Rover’s aim to achieve zero tailpipe emissions by 2036, and net zero carbon emissions across its supply chain, products and operations by 2039, in line with the Reimagine strategy announced last month. FCEVs, which generate electricity from hydrogen to power an electric motor, are complimentary to battery electric vehicles on the journey to net zero… Read more

LAND ROVER DISCOVERY SPORT IS A MILD HYBRID

Land Rover Discovery Sport has been enhanced with efficient next-generation mild-hybrid Ingenium diesel engines as well as the latest Pivi and Pivi Pro infotainment systems. Available in two power outputs, the D165 (120kW) and D200 (150kW) both use Land Rover’s latest mild-hybrid technology, featuring a battery to harvest energy lost under deceleration and reuses it later. This makes for smoother stop-start operation and reduced fuel consumption. Land Rover’s Pivi infotainment system is ready to go as soon as it’s switched on because a separate data plan and battery mean there’s… Read more

LAND ROVER DISCOVERY SPORT 2015 – 2019

2018 Land Rover Discovery Sport

First of all, note that the Land Rover Discovery Sport isn’t a name attached to another model, rather it’s a vehicle in its own right. Discovery Sport is not a toy SUV masquerading as a 4WD, it is the real deal – an all-terrain vehicle from the old school. One that can be taken into tough off-road conditions where, believe it or not, even the rather crude Land Rover Series 1 would have struggled when it was launched 72 years ago. Yet the Discovery Sport will meet all the requirements… Read more
