THE CARNIVAL IS FAR FROM OVER

The Carnival continues to be a popular attraction, despite people movers making way for SUVs. Like Toyota did with Tarago’s radical rebirth as the ‘egg’ in the 1990s, Kia has rewritten the people mover rules to produce a GUV (Grand Utility Vehicle). The Carnival is quite unlike any car we’ve crafted before, says the South Korean carmaker. Fusing SUV-inspired design with a unique attitude, the Carnival uses progressive styling that boasts an aesthetic like no other. Featuring a luxurious interior for eight, lavishly equipped with next-generation Kia technology, the Carnival… Read more

LEXUS LM 350H AWD SPORTS LUXURY

Back in the old days people thought the world was flat. They thought that if you sailed far enough you would eventually fall off the edge. Lexus engineers seem to think the same thing, because the front doors of its new LM people mover won’t stay open on a slope. Then there’s the heavy, power-operated, second-row seats which won’t move forward and stay forward to access to the third row when the vehicle is also parked on a slope. For a luxury vehicle with a price tag to match, it’s… Read more

TOYOTA GRANVIA IS A PREMIUM PEOPLE MOVER

Launched here in 2019 the Toyota Granvia effectively replaced the long-running Tarago people mover. At the same time, it moved its target audience beyond the family friendly transporter into the high-end hospitality and corporate market. To do so, Granvia had to increase in size and it measures 5300mm long and 1990 mm high. That’s 505mm longer and 240mm higher than the last Tarago and takes Granvia into modern minibus territory. Granvia is offered in two spec levels, Standard and Granvia VX, each with the choice of six or eight seats…. Read more

FUTURISTIC HYUNDAI STARIA IS A REAL HEADER-TURNER

Both come with a strikingly futuristic look with a steeply sloping front with a wide body-coloured radiator grille flanked by low-set LED headlights and a full-width horizontal LED strip above comprising a centre lamp and daytime running lights. Comparisons have been drawn to the now-defunct Space Shuttle. Both Staria models are engineered from the ground up on a dedicated platform shared with the Santa Fe. We’ll cover the Staria Load in another review and focus on the people mover here STYLING While it may polarise opinions, the Staria certainly has… Read more

TAKE TWO FOR LEXUS LUXURY PEOPLE MOVER

Lexus is chasing hire car operators with the launch of the new upmarket LM hybrid- powered people mover. The second-generation LM (short for luxury mover) has been unveiled at the 2023 Shanghai motor show. Sharing a platform with the Toyota Camry, Kluger and RAV4, as well as three current Lexus models, it looks much like a Tarago behind the Lexus spindle grille. The new-generation model has been completely redesigned and will be launched in more than 60 countries. Lexus designers apparently adopted the theme “Dignified Elegance” when crafting the new… Read more

NOT ELECTRIC, NOT HYBRID – BUT DON’T BE MIFA(D)

LDV’s new Mifa people mover is coming, but it’s not the electric one – at least not yet. Arriving this month Mifa comes in three grades – Mode, Executive and Luxe – powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine which delivers 160kW of power and 360Nm of torque, through an 8-speed Japanese Aisin automatic gearbox. There’s no hybrid and no battery electric version, and no mention of them either. Overseas it’s offered with the 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine or a 2.0-litre turbodiesel. LDV describes Mifa as a people mover for… Read more
