A LAST GASP OF HYUNDAI’S PETROL-POWERED PERFORMANCE

As the battle for the streets between electric power and the internal combustion engine the latter, in one case, is putting up a stiff rearguard action with Hyundai upgrading its i30 N performance car. The new hot hatch has been given a fresh appearance, advanced technology and enhanced safety equipment’ capped off by swifter access to the fast-and-furious N Grin Shift function. All join a powertrain and driving dynamics that already have put Hyundai’s first ‘N’ at the head of the ‘grid’. With the MY25 upgrade Australia is the only… Read more

GENESIS GV70 REVIEW

It’s still not a household name, at least not in motoring circles, but Genesis is the luxury sub-brand of Hyundai in the same way as Lexus is to Toyota. There are plenty of model choices: two sedans (G70 and G80), three SUVs (GV60, GV70 and GV80) with petrol, diesel and electric powertrains as well as two- and all-wheel drive in the SUVs. GV70, the mid-sized SUV, is this week’s test. It comes with the choice of 2.5- and 3.5-litre turbocharged petrol engines and fully-electric EV. The entry-level 2.5T comes with… Read more

HYUNDAI PALISADE IS BIG AND BOLD

Launched here in late 2020, Palisade is the largest model in Hyundai’s SUV range. IONIQ 5, EV TO THE NTH DEGREE

EV power is the great equaliser, according to Tim Rodgers – big battery, big power, big tyres, zero to 100km/h in less than four seconds – and ultra-fast examples are relatively easy to do. As Hyundai Australia product development manager, he should know. Rodgers spent a year and a half on three continents helping to hone the suspension and systems of the new high performance Ioniq 5 N all-electric vehicle. The absence of ICE limitations and the scope for new technologies was daunting initially. However, it made the development of… Read more

HYBRID POWER POINTS TO ZERO EMISSIONS

With a dim start to electrification of the automobile Down Under, due considerably to the snail-pace roll-out of charging infrastructure to keep up, many car manufacturers have doubled down on petrol / electric hybrid models. Latest switch-on is Hyundai with its new Kona SUV range consisting initially of internal combustion engine vehicles and totally electric powered variants. Both come with a strikingly futuristic look with a steeply sloping front with a wide body-coloured radiator grille flanked by low-set LED headlights and a full-width horizontal LED strip above comprising a centre lamp and daytime running lights. Comparisons have been drawn to the now-defunct Space Shuttle. Both Staria models are engineered from the ground up on a dedicated platform shared with the Santa Fe.
