CITROEN BERLINGO VANS ON TRACK

What were two French delivery vans doing parked side by side at one of Australia’s premier motor racing circuits on a summer’s day with the temperature nudging 30 degrees? Good question. The pair – new Citroen Berlingos – were at Sydney Motorsports Park (nee Eastern Creek) where the motoring media were given an early Christmas gift of a go against the clock in Long Body manual and semi-automatic variants on a wet witches-hatted circuit representing the back streets of Paris after a summer shower. To add a touch of seasonal… Read more

CITROEN DS19

The DS 19 Citroen was in production without fundamental change from 1955 to 1975 and was as far ahead of its time when introduced as the 7CV Traction Avant before it. One of the principal features of this car was the unique hydro-pneumatic suspension system which had the interesting effect of flattening rough roads and enabling ground clearance to be varied from 16.5 cm to 29.5 cm. This same hydro-pneumatic also controlled the DS’s brakes and transmission. After a year the DS19 was joined by the less expensive ID models… Read more

LIMITED EDITION DS 5 INTRODUCED

One day I’m going to find a 1955 Citroen DS in immaculate condition and show it to someone who has absolutely no interest in cars. I will tell them it’s a prototype of a 2016 Citroen and ask their opinion on the stunning styling. It will come as no surprise to me if they accept that the 60-year old French car in front of them is going to be launched next year. Those who do know their cars are still stunned that such a futuristic model was launched at the… Read more

CITROEN C4 LOOKS BACK IN MAJOR MOVES FORWARD

On August 4, 1925, Nevill Westwood, a Seventh Day Adventist missionary, set out from Perth to spread the word of his beliefs to other Australians. Driving a Citroen 5CV Tourer, known affectionately as ‘Bubsie’, after 148 days and 17,220 kilometres, he returned home having become the first person to drive around Australia. Ninety years after Westwood’s marathon, Citroen has given us an upgraded C4 hatchback. In two models, Seduction and Exclusive, the range features an all-new drivetrain, fresh styling and improved comfort and convenience over the previous model. It has… Read more

CITROEN C4 PICASSO OOZES STYLE

Buyers looking for something that doesn’t follow convention and who appreciate a real touch of French flair should certainly have the latest Citroen C4 Picasso on their short (often very short) list of potential cars. Just what is the Citroen C4 Picasso? It’s hard to define, being a mixture of a tall hatchback and a people mover, with a touch of SUV thrown in for good measure. This is not the first Citroen that refuses to slot neatly into any category, nor will it be the last. We love the… Read more

CITROEN DS3 DESIGN DOWN TO FINE ART

In automotive terms ‘sculpted’ is an overworked word often used to give a car arty design cred. However, sometimes there is a line of truth to the application. Take the new Citroen DS3, for example, whose lines bring to mind the curves and concave lines of a Henry Moore reclining figure, or the smooth marble surface of a Barbara Hepworth monolith, all classics of abstract 20th century sculpture. The Citroen DS3 DSport compact hatch and cabriolet exteriors exhibit bits of each artists’ unique signatures – clever curves, flowing lines, tactile… Read more

NEW CITROEN DS 3 COMBINES DRIVING FUN WITH THAT FRENCH X-FACTOR

Launching the upgraded Citroen DS 3, Citroen Australia has announced it will bring in cars Australians want and will not compete to be the cheapest in the market. The company also foreshadowed the DS brand would split from Citroen as a stand-alone brand, although this was some time away. In this way DS cars would head in one direction – much like Lexus and Toyota or Infiniti and Nissan – and Citroen would pursue a different course. Right now though the cars are sold side by side in more than… Read more

CLASSIC CARS: CITROEN CX 1974-1989

1979 Citroen CX2400 Pallas

The Citroen CX was a replacement car for the Citroen D-series – one of the most successful cars of the 1950s and 60s. The CX was designed by Robert Opron who had originally conceived the DS. Shortly after its release the CX was voted ‘Car of the Year’ by the European motoring press and at the 1975 Geneva Motor Show it was awarded the ultimate acclaim from 170 International design experts: The Style Auto award. Many of the design features from earlier Citroens were carried through to the CX. Possibly… Read more

NEW CITROEN C4 PICASSO

Never has Citroen followed convention, just look at the lines of the C4 Picasso. Like its predecessors it looks like nothing else on the road. Most of the upper surfaces are glass, from its huge windscreen that almost merges into a super-sized sunroof and onto the sleek rear rear glass it’s all about looks. All occupants have 360 degree surround vision, then there are the big pictures above them. Great fun and sure to take the boredom of of long trips. Fortunately for Australian drivers, particularly in the northern areas,… Read more
