BMW 6 SERIES GETS SPORTING UPGRADE

BMW 6 Series has just been introduced to Australia and takes a strong sporting stance. Which comes as no surprise as sales of the sportiest model, the M6, has made up close to half of all 6 Series sales in recent years. Also part of the new package is the ability to personalise the big sporting Bimmers. This includes different paint colours, unusually this is often at no added cost. Talk to your dealer for details on the paints. Subtle changes to the frontal styling of the 6 Series see… Read more

2015 BMW 228I CONVERTIBLE REVIEW

The BMW 2 Series convertible follows on from the rather popular 1 Series convertible of the previous, E87-based generation. With better styling and a new range of engines, the new car joined the range earlier this year. The convertible 2 Series has a lot to live up to – it’s big brother, the 4 Series, is a terrific conversion and the 2 starts from behind with a cloth roof rather than folding hardtop. While the 220i was a good start, the 228i is the top of the four-cylinder tree, and… Read more

BMW CONCENTRATING ON THE HOT VERSIONS OF ITS 1 SERIES

BMW has just thrown its hat into the ring of one of the most tightly-fought of all market segments in Australia, that of the upmarket hot-hatch. Not that the1 Series models haven’t been major players since day one over 10 years ago, it’s just that BMW is looking closely at the activities of Audi and Mercedes, and sees big things happening. So there’s going to be a big emphasis on the BMW M135i and its slightly tamer, but still quick, younger brother, the 125i. The Australian branch of BMW would… Read more

2015 BMW X6 50i REVIEW

BMW X6 is a fascinating cross between the BMW X5 station wagon and a five-door coupe. Performance is excellent if you buy one of the topline models like the BMW X6 50i in which we have just enjoyed a exciting week. Though the all-new X6 is bigger in most dimensions than the original model it’s lighter, only by about 10 kg, but this mass reduction shows clever engineering. Big and bold on the outside, BMWX6 is slightly compromised inside, a least in the rear seat. But, that’s hardly a complaint… Read more

BMW i3: THE WAY TO GO

The i3 is the start of future motoring according to BMW – a very bold statement that had us initially feeling sceptical, even cynical. However, the more time we spent at the wheel of the BMW i3 the more we smiled and agreed with BMW’s apparently outrageous prediction. BMW (under different names) has been in the vanguard of design for almost a century. It began designing aircraft piston engines in 1916, then very-early jet engines in 1942, before moving into tiny ‘bubble’ cars in the 1950s, finally getting into prestigious… Read more

BMW’S STUNNING i8 SUPERCAR

BMW made an excellent decision when it came to the styling of its sensational new i8 supercar. “If it’s going to be radical under the skin,” has been the reasoning, “Let’s make it equally radical in the body.” Hybrid power is more than just about saving fuel and lowering emissions, it can be the source of brilliant performance. All Grand Prix cars are now hybrids, as are the winning machines in top division of the famed Le Mans 24-hour race. There’s no doubt that the white-hot pace of design in… Read more

BMW X3 HAS TONS OF ROOM AND A REAL ROAD PRESENCE

BMW’s second-generation X3 has firmly cemented itself in BMW’s expansive range. The first attempt at a mid-sizer was a bit of a dud to look at and not particularly brilliant to drive. The second cleared up both of those problems, and got a bit bigger into the bargain. The diesel X3s are cracking cars – smooth, fast and quiet. There’s a bit of a secret in the range that some might skip over – the 28i. It’s a big car for a 2.0-litre four and it doesn’t look particularly promising… Read more

2015 BMW 2 SERIES CONVERTIBLE REVIEW

The introduction of the all-new BMW 2 Series convertible sees the popular 1 Series cabrio confined to Australian motoring history. The new car looks like it has jumped a segment and the reality is that its 72 mm longer at 4432 mm, 27 mm wider at 1774 mm and the wheelbase has grown 30 mm to 2690 mm, ensuring its proportions and balance are just right when viewed in profile. The small BMW takes on a wide, purposeful stance highlighted by short overhangs. The basic formula is still the same:… Read more

BMW X6: BIG, BRASH COUPE

Let’s get the styling out of the way first, because the original BMW X6 was criticised by many for its looks when it first hit the roads of Australia midway through 2008. A cross between the very successful BMW X5 station wagon and a five-door coupe it polarised opinions here, indeed globally right from the start. BMW Australia’s people were alway keen to point out the X6 was selling its wheels (very large wheels) off and that we journos didn’t understand what it was all about. It seems they were… Read more

BMW M3: PERFORMANCE AND PRAGMATISM

BMW has taken a bit of a gamble with its latest M3 performance car, firstly by replacing the V8 engine with a new twin-turbo six and by renaming the coupe and convertible variants as M4s leaving the M3 only available as a four-door sedan. Purists will no doubt mourn the passing of the V8’s throaty growl but should be placated by the added power and torque from the new turbo six, while the name change for the two-door models is part of BMW’s even-number policy and may quickly be accepted….
