MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER EXCEED TOURER

You can understand why Japanese and Korean car makers continue to rollout petrol- only models. Not all buyers want or can afford the cost of an electric vehicle, although that is the way the market is ultimately heading. With a barrage of competition from cheaper Chinese rivals, anything they can do to pick up a few extra sales is fast becoming essential. And so, we have the top of the range Outlander Exceed Tourer, powered by a 2.5- litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, with all the bells and whistles to… Read more

ICE BREAKER TACKLES OCEAN OF EVS

While the EV hordes are laying siege to the fossil-fuelled SUV segment, the ‘clean machjnes’ are not having it all their own way. The ‘old soldiers’ are fighting a rearguard action. With service stations for refuelling the internal combustion engine (ICE) on almost every street corner, compared with shortcomings in the supply of infrastructure for public fast charging of EVs, especially out of town, range anxiety abounds. Far from throwing in the towel, the Mitsubishi Outlander, released in Australia in 2021 and the country’s fifth best-selling model last year, recently… Read more

TRITON TESTED – IT’S JUST A QUESTION OF THE PRICE.

After a string of hybrid and fully-electric vehicles, including a full-blown electric ute, it was kind of refreshing to get behind the wheel of a no-frills turbo-diesel 4×4 ute like they used to make (and obviously still do). The five-seat Mitsubishi Triton GLX double cab “Pick Up” (somewhere along the line they became pickups) , in either 4×2 or 4×4 configuration, is just such a beast, complete with good old fashioned steel wheels. Mitsubishi describes the GLX as everything you want in a tough, reliable and durable ute —… Read more

THE ICE AGE LINGERS WITH ‘JURASSIC’ PAJERO

In the face of the red-hot advance of electric power, one internal combustion engine vehicle is moving at glacial pace to extend the ICE age. The Pajero Sport landed Down Under more than a decade ago and, with its long-standing diesel motor, is sticking steadfastly to the fossil-fuelled task. The MY24 large seven-seat family SUV is betting on competitive pricing and the slow-to-thaw roll-out of public fast charging infrastructure for the EV upstarts, leading to a pandemic of ‘range anxiety’ among owners. The ladder-frame Pajero Sport competes with other rugged… Read more

TRITON TOPS UP TECH, TWEAKS POWERTRAIN

You have to hand it to Mitsubishi: they are not backward at going forward. Take the latest Triton, for example, which had hardly hit the road Down Under in February this year before a technical upgrade in July and the addition of new payload options below 1000kg one month later. Both, says Mitsubishi, were the result of real-world feedback across several key stakeholders, such as dealers, the media and all-new Triton customers. Of the original were the popular Pick-Up body style in Double Cab and Club Cab body; followed by… Read more

MITSUBISHI ASX ES STREET

Mitsubishi ASX is the smallest vehicle in the company’s four-model SUV range beneath the Eclipse Cross, Outlander and Pajero Sport.   ASX (the acronym stands for Active Sports Crossover, not Australian Stock Exchange) has been around since 2010 and competes against a host of rivals in the small SUV category including Hyundai Kona, Mazda CX-30, Kia Seltos, Subaru XV, Toyota C-HR  and the class sales leading MG ZS.   Despite being largely unchanged throughout the decade ASX has been a star performer for Mitsubishi thanks to a combination of… Read more

OUTLANDER PLUGS INTO FAMILY LIFE

The plug-in hybrid models have not been left behind in Mitsubishi’s latest upgrades to its Outlander SUV range, adding even more appeal to the company’s popular EVs. Plug-in hybrids have been around for years and offer a choice of full-on electric drive for short trips, with the complement of internal combustion power to avoid range anxiety on longer journeys. With totally electric powered vehicles rapidly advancing, the plug-in hybrid, led by the Outlander, is intent on making a stand for its own segment. With greater battery capacity (20kWh) and a… Read more

MITSUBISHI TRITON GLS 4X4 DUAL CAB UTE

Watching the Olympics, it’s all about who gets the gold. No one remembers anyone beyond the top three placings and so it goes with utes and the Australian new car market. Ranger is the gold medalist, with a clear lead, followed by Hilux with the silver and the D-Max with the bronze. Also-rans include the Mitsubishi Triton, back for a sixth crack at the record but still sitting a fair way back in fourth position out of medal contention. Although its redesigned front now carries the Mitsubishi name, it doesn’t… Read more

WAIT IS NEARLY OVER FOR THE NEW MITSUBISHI TRITON

Mitsubishi Australia has announced additional details of its new sixth-generation Triton utility due to arrive here in February 2024. Larger than before, the sixth generation Triton has been completely redesigned for the first time in nine years and comes with a more powerful and cleaner engine, a new ladder frame, upgraded interior and extra tech and safety feature. Not surprisingly, these improvements come at a cost with price rises of between $3250 and $7600 before on-road costs. As before there are four equipment levels: GLX, GLX+, GLS and GSR available… Read more

‘BLACK’ MAKES LIGHT WORK OF SUV CHALLENGE

The auto industry continues to be awash with gismos that are increasingly taking the ‘drive’ out of driver. Sports utility vehicles – especially all-wheel drives – are particularly subject to systems that butt in. Welcome to the no-nonsense world of the Outlander Black Edition. While the mid-size Mitsubishi petrol and petrol / electric hybrid SUV, for 2024, has been given a leg-up in equipment standards – plus price rises – the former LS Black Edition has been let loose from the pack to stand on its own. Not that there’s… Read more
