TOYOTA FORTUNER FILLS A GAP

You don’t hear much about the Toyota Fortuner. Launched in 2015, Fortuner is the SUV equivalent of the Hilux utility. Like the Kluger it comes with seven seats, but it’s aimed at a quite different buyer. Depending on your perspective, it’s either the quiet achiever or the under-achiever, with about half the sales of Prado. For Toyota, its raison d’etre is or perhaps was to provide a diesel option to Kluger as well as an affordable alternative for those who can’t afford a Land Cruiser. But now that the US-engineered… Read more

TOYOTA ADDS PERFORMANCE ENHANCEMENTS TO ITS MARKET-LEADING HILUX

Toyota scoured the globe to find something extra for its best-selling HiLux pick-up range. With inspiration coming from the Dakar, one of the toughest off-road endurance events in the world, plus input from the company’s Australian design team in Melbourne and extensive testing here, the result is the all-terrain performance GR Sport dual cab. Seen as a replacement for the range-topping Rugged X, Toyota landed on the GR HiLux racecar that was making its presence felt in one of the world’s toughest off-road endurance events, the Dakar Rally, for inspiration,… Read more

NEW TOYOTA HILUX GR SPORT IS FINALLY HERE

It’s been a long frustrating wait for HiLux fans but the new flagship GR Sport has now arrived. The HiLux GR Sport is the latest Toyota to get the Gazoo Racing treatment, joining the LandCruiser 300, Yaris, Yaris Cross, CH-R, Supra and GR86. Available exclusively in dual cab format, the new HiLux GR Sport uses an upgraded version of the standard 2.8-litre turbocharged diesel engine, but with revised turbo- supercharging and fuel-injection increasing power from 150 to 165kW and torque from 500 to 550Nm making it the most powerful diesel… Read more

TOYOTA FORTUNER IS THE REAL DEAL IN 4WDS

Toyota Fortuner is a seven-seat SUV that’s based on the HiLux pickup truck. Though not generally known to Australians the Fortuner nameplate isn’t new for Toyota. The first version, also based on the HiLux pickup of its day, has been around since 2005 where it sold as an Asia-only workhorse. Fortuner eventually came here in late-2015 and has been a consistent, if not spectacular, seller in the congested sub-$70,000 large SUV segment, although it’s more and old-style 4WD than an SUV. Three variants are available, GX, GXL and Crusade priced… Read more

HYBRID HILUX PROMISED NEXT YEAR

Toyota may not have kicked off the whole hybrid thing, but it has certainly made the technology its own here in Australia. The Japanese car maker now offers hybrid versions of just about all models, except that is for Australia’s best-selling car – the Hilux utility. That’s about to change with confirmation that HiLux will be offered for the first time with a 48-volt mild hybrid setup in the first half of 2024. But here’s the thing, it won’t be a petrol hybrid like the rest of them. This one… Read more

TOYOTA IRONS OUT ROGUE TUB-TOP KINKS

Following an earlier stumble or two, the Rogue has redeemed itself. The HiLux top-dog ute has taken its rightful place as the genuine hero of Australia’s best-selling range of vehicles. My introduction to the HiLux Rogue last year was fraught, with its motorised roll-top tray cover jamming centimetres from full retraction with no amount of button pressing – even physical exertion on my part – getting it to close. Revisiting the MY21 dual-cab utility recently everything worked to order, which was welcome as the tonneau cover is the result of… Read more

TOYOTA HILUX GETS THE GR SPORT TREATMENT

Not satisfied with registering its seventh straight year as Australia’s top-selling vehicle, Toyota has unveiled the latest, and most powerful, version of its HiLux ute. The HiLux GR Sport is the latest Toyota to get the Gazoo Racing treatment, joining the LandCruiser 300, Yaris, Yaris Cross, CH-R, Supra and GR86. Available exclusively in dual cab format, the new HiLux GR Sport uses an upgraded version of the standard 2.8-litre turbocharged diesel, but with revised turbo-supercharging and fuel-injection increasing power from 150 to 165kW and torque from 500 to 550Nm making… Read more

NEW CAR SALES UP IN 2022 DESPITE SUPPLY ISSUES

The Federal Chamber Of Automotive Industries (FCAI) has released the final Australian motor vehicle sales figures for 2022. Despite demand exceeding supply as a result of the usual suspects, COVID-19 and the war in Ukraine, the Australian automotive market still recorded sales of 1,081,429 new vehicles – an increase of 3% over 2021 sales. For the 20th straight year Toyota was Australia’s top selling car brand with 231,050 units, an increase of 3.3%. Although Mazda sales declined by 5.3% it remained in clear second place with 95,718 sales, with Kia… Read more
