Although it’s still a few weeks away from its global launch, and at least six months away
from arriving here, Hyundai Australia has released details and images of its latest (fifth
generation) Santa Fe family SUV.
Styling is radically different to any previous Santa Fe model with a squared-off, chiselled
look replacing the smoother curves of the current model suggesting more serious off-road
credentials than before although not to the extent as the similarly-shaped Land Rover
Defender.
The most striking feature is at the front where the latest Hyundai ‘family’ treatment that we
first saw in the current Staria people mover, then in the just-released Kona SUV and in
previews of the upcoming Sonata and i30 sedans.
Common to each of these vehicles is a narrow light band that stretches across the full
width. In the new Santa Fe two vertical light merge into the horizonal bar to form the letter
‘H’ and to frame the headlights.
This H theme continues throughout the vehicle, most noticeably at the rear, but also inside
where a H-motif design is applied to the dashboard and air vents.
In profile the increased wheelbase accommodates a bold roofline, powerful volume around
the fenders, semi-octagonal wheel arches, shortened front overhang and 21-inch wheels.,
The interior design emphasises horizontal and vertical lines, to enhance the sense of
openness.
The most controversial feature of the new Santa Fe’s design is likely to be at the rear
where the tailgate covers the entire width of the vehicle. We don’t have full specifications
yet but we can just about guarantee that it will be powered and kick-operated although
care will need to be taken to ensure that there’s sufficient space.
As before new Santa Fe will have three rows of seating and with the tailgate open and the
rear two rows folded flat there is what Hyundai is calling a terrace area ideal for a variety of
purposes, such as grocery shopping, home improvement projects, sports and recreation,
gardening, family outings and pet transportation. Even, at a pinch, camping.
Although specific details are limited Hyundai is promising a variety of high-tech features,
including a Panoramic Curved Display and dual wireless charging. The curved display
connects the 12.3-inch digital cluster and infotainment system and enhances driver
visibility.
Also promised are brightly coloured seats and headliners with soft-touch wood-patterned
garnish and Nappa leather seats with delicate embroidery.
New Santa Fe will also use a number of sustainable materials including suede headliner,
car mats, and second- and third-row seatbacks are made from recycled plastic, while the
crash pad and door trim covers are made from eco-friendly leatherette.
The all-new Santa Fe will make its world premiere in August on Hyundai’s YouTube
channel. Production is expected to commence at the start of 2024 with delivery to Australia
in the first half of that year.
