Mercedes-Benz Australia has announced details of two new variants to its second generation CLA-Class four-door coupe range, joining the CLA 200 that debuted here midway through this year.
The new models are the Mercedes-Benz CLA 250, priced at $68,800 and the all-new Mercedes-AMG CLA 35 ($83,400). They are expected in local showrooms from early 2020 where they will join the $59,500 CLA 200. Note that these prices do not include on-road costs.
These three models will be followed later in the first quarter 2020 by the range-topping AMG CLA 45 S with a yet to be announced price tag.
The previous Shooting Brake (aka station wagon) variant has been dropped from the Australian range.
The original CLA had been around since September 2013 so the upgrade was about due given the significant advances especially in safety and technology in the intervening years.
The Gen 2 CLA is longer (by 48 mm) and wider (+53mm) than before with a 30 mm longer wheelbase combining to provide extra interior space.
The CLA 250 is powered by a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine generating 165kW with 350Nm of torque through a seven-speed automatic transmission driven through Benz’s 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system.
New to CLA 250 are a panoramic electric glass sunroof, and a Night Package that includes tinted privacy glass and gloss-black exterior trim enhancements together with the connectivity of Mercedes me Connect, which enables a host of smartphone-controlled features including Remote Engine Start.
Also standard in the CLA 250 are AMG Line exterior styling and 18-inch AMG five twin-spoke alloy wheels; automatic climate control; Artico/Dinamica sports seats; MBUX multimedia interface with two customisable 10.25-inch colour touchscreens; ambient lighting featuring 64 colours; DAB+ digital radio; Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto integration and wireless smartphone charging.
The Mercedes-AMG CLA 35 is new to the range and comes with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder twin-scroll turbocharged engine that produces 225kW of power and 400Nm of torque through an AMG Speedshift DCT seven-speed dual-clutch sports transmission. As with the CLA 250 drive is to all four wheels, but through an enhanced AMG Performance 4MATIC.
The CLA 350 also gets an AMG-specific exhaust and brake packages, plus exterior and interior cosmetic enhancements and 19-inch AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels.
Inside the front seats feature two-tone Lugano leather with power adjustment and heating.
Safety features in both new CLA models include nine airbags, Active Brake Assist with semi-autonomous braking function, Adaptive Highbeam Assist, Blind Spot Assist with exit warning assistant, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Traffic Sign Assist, Pre-Safe accident anticipation system, reversing camera with dynamic guidelines and 180-degree wide-angle visibility, automatic headlights and rain-sensing wipers.
