A full program of competition and off-track 25th anniversary event has been confirmed for the postponed 2021 Historic Leyburn Sprints, now scheduled for 11-12 September.
Around 200 historic classic and performance cars will chase fastest times on the challenging, round-the-houses Sprints course, while fans will see special demonstration runs by Australia’s oldest racing car, the 1922 Wikner Ford Special, and the historic, race-winning NASCAR of Australian star Marcos Ambrose.
Off-track, the popular Shannons Show ‘n’ Shine and Vintage Caravan displays, meet-and-greet appearances by the Leyburn Legends including Dick Johnson, country markets, exhibitor and trade displays, a fun run and charity auction promise a fun-packed weekend for every visitor.
Commemorating the running of the 1949 Australian Grand Prix on an ex-wartime airfield near the tiny township, the Historic Leyburn Sprints is one of Australia’s most popular historic and classic motorsport events and attracts up to 15,000 visitors every year.
Sprints President Tricia Chant says all the original attractions and suppliers have committed to the new event date and most competitor entries have been retained.
“We have all current Covid-19 requirements in place to protect our visitors and of course will be responding to any changes if they arise.
“It’s been a big task to move everything back three weeks and like everyone we’ve walked a tightrope with Covid-19, but we’ve done it and I thank everyone from our suppliers and volunteer officials to competitors, sponsors, exhibitors and traders.
“The Historic Leyburn Sprints attracts visitors from a wide area of Queensland and will be a major event for the Southern Darling Downs when everyone is in need of a boost to their spirits or their business trading.”
Competition at the re-scheduled Sprints will start at 8am on both days. Adult ticket prices are unchanged for more than five years: $20 for Saturday or Sunday or $30 for the weekend. Children aged under 14 enter free and street parking is free.
Leyburn is around 60 km north-west of Warwick and 220 km from Brisbane.
