HOLDEN BARINA RS OFFERS A LOT FOR A MODEST PRICE

Holden Barina RS has lowered suspension, big wheels and revamped front and rear styling to give it a really sporty appearance

Holden versus Ford, the oldest battle in automotive Australia continues – isn’t that good! This time around it’s the tiddlers that are facing off to one another with Holden releasing a new model, the Barina RS, to take on Ford’s Fiesta Sport. These aren’t ultra-expensive machines competing in the hot-hatch field. Rather they can be classified as ‘warm-hatches’. Those looking for a bit more punch from the engine and better handling dynamics, but who are on a tight budget, can pick up a Barina RS for just $20,990 (auto $23,190)…. Read more

2013 HOLDEN TRAX REVIEW

If the small SUV segment was hot before, it’s now sizzling. The two latest entrants in the competition add style, and a lot more, to the compact SUV offerings – those being Nissan’s new out-there Juke and Holden’s nicely styled Trax. Our test car for the week was the new Holden Trax in its highest specification level, the  LTZ. It comes comes standard with a six-speed auto transmission. INFOTAINMENT In our launch story of this vehicle we highlighted the MyLink media system that Holden is running out across its range…. Read more

TOYOTA PRADO 1996 – 2013

A sensible cross between a full-on 4WD and a passenger carrying SUV, the Toyota Prado is built by the Japanese company that’s now in its sixth decade in the off-road field in Australia. Prado is almost as capable in heavy-duty off-road work as its big brother LandCruiser, but provides better comfort and handling than the Cruiser. Not a lot better mind you, these Toyotas are nowhere near the same class as the big SUVs from Audi, BMW and Mercedes in the on-road dynamic stakes. Parking can be a problem until… Read more

HOLDEN COMMODORE INTERNATIONAL EDITION

“When in doubt, add some extra equipment and stick ‘International’ badges on the car,” appears to be written in the Holden instruction manual for increasing new-car sales. International special editions of Holdens have been around for decades, though mostly on the upmarket long-wheelbase Statesman models. The just superseded VE Commodore broke that trend and the VE International did pretty well in the sales race back in the days when Commodores looked likely to stay in number one spot just about forever. Now Holden has seized on the chance of increasing… Read more

HOLDEN VF COMMODORE UTE – THE MOST SOPHISTICATED YET?

Big and unashamedly bold in its shape the new Holden VF Commodore Ute is arguably the most sophisticated of its type ever sold in Australia. Our test VF Ute wasn’t the usual upmarket, loaded-with-extras model we get from many car makers, but the ‘get down and dirty entry-level variant’, the Evoke. It used the 3.6-litre SIDI V6 engine with an automatic transmission, and had a manufacturer’s list price of just $32,990. That’s a hefty $2500 less than its predecessor the VE Commodore Ute on which it is heavily based. The… Read more

HOLDEN MALIBU HAS SUNNY DISPOSITION

Here’s a radical thought: if Holden was to build the Malibu in Australia, put Commodore badges on it and add a bit more pep to the engines it might sell up a storm. Australian car buyers have made it clear they no longer want large family cars, now preferring medium SUVs or small cars. The Holden Malibu, which is sold as a family car by Chevrolet in the USA, is a size down on the Commodore and may have turned out to be exactly what Aussies are looking for… Read more

CAPTIVA 5 ADDS REFINEMENT

These days very few SUV buyers are looking 4WD capability in off-road conditions, rather they want an on-road station wagon with a high level of equipment and the premium features usually only found in upmarket models. Well aware of this, Holden has introduced a new model to its Captiva 5 range. Titled the LTZ, it comes as standard with 19-inch alloy wheels, leather trim, heated front seats, a powered driver’s seat. Perhaps even more importantly, Holden’s Captiva LTZ has an all-new six-speed ‘Gen II’ automatic transmission that’s designed to reduce… Read more

HOLDEN MAKES TRAX TO THE BOOMING COMPACT SUV MARKET

With no end in sight to the SUV boom GM Holden has added to the choices in the compact segment with its all-new Trax – a five-door, five-seat, high-riding and handsome wagon that is as much about media technology for savvy city slickers as it is engines and drivetrains. Trax is a global SUV sold in the US as the Chevrolet Trax and elsewhere as the Opel Mokka. Australia is getting the 2WD drive version powered by the same 1.8-litre in-line four found in the current Holden Cruze. It comes… Read more

HOLDEN CRUZE SRI: SPORTINESS IN A FAMILY CAR

Styling of the Cruze SRi features a lower-body kit, foglamps and a shapely rear spoiler. The subject of this week’s road test, Holden Cruze hatchback, was largely designed in Holden’s Melbourne design studio. It’s built at the Holden plant in Adelaide, and has undergone extensive local engineering for Australian conditions. That’s not the only good news for the Australian automotive industry; the Aussie designed Holden Cruze is made in various GM factories worldwide and is being sold in more than 60 countries, where it’s generally badged as a Chevrolet. This… Read more
