HOLDEN COLORADO THUNDER

The special edition Thunder pack bulks up the Holden Colorado

The toughest of all market arenas in the hard fought Australian market is that of light commercial vehicles (LCVs). Best known as utes, or the American term, pickup. Today, these vehicles are far more than load haulers. Indeed, some of them will never heft more than a jet-ski or trail bike because utes are more and more often the vehicle of choice for tough guys, and occasionally tough gals buy them as well. Showponies? Perhaps, but some of them look brilliant and are cared for with a great deal of… Read more

NEW COMMODORE CRAMMED WITH TECHNOLOGY

Holden MyLink screen

The automobile industry doesn’t get anywhere near the credit it deserves for the advances in road safety over the last four decades. Although there have been some legislative requirements the vast majority of innovations have been brought in voluntarily and with competition between carmakers driving the safety of motor vehicles to higher and higher levels. While many of the initiatives have originated in Europe it’s reassuring to see Holden taking the lead with an Australian-made car that’s at the leading edge of vehicle safety. The following features are available in… Read more

NEW VF COMMODORE WELL WORTH THE WAIT

VF Commodore range

It’s been a hectic week in the Australian car industry, with Ford’s factory closure announcement coinciding with the release of the latest Holden Commodore, the VF series. GM Holden is looking to turn around the downward trend in Commodore sales with a three-pronged attack based around significant price cuts, a big range of additional equipment and a renewed export drive. Annual sales of the Commodore have been in steady decline since their peak of nearly 95,000 in 1998 with the 2012 tally of around 30,500 being the lowest ever. While… Read more

HOLDEN COMMODORE 1997 – 2012

2010 Holden VE Series II Commodore SV6

Holden’s Commodore was the best selling car in Australia for many years, though it has slipped recently due to many buyers switching from large cars to compact SUVs. There are hundreds of used Commodores on sale at any one time, so smart buyers can find exactly the model / price / quality they want. Commodore is very well suited to Australian driving conditions, and also has the driving feel many keen Aussie drivers demand. This is a genuine five-seater, though the traveller in the centre-rear seat may find foot space… Read more

GREAT NEWS FOR REVHEADS

Holden Volt

Here’s some great news for all revheads – electric cars are coming! Before you choke on your breakfast toast, swear at me and throw this newspaper into the bin, hear me out. I’ve driven a number of the new generation electric cars in the last couple years, in Australia, Europe and Japan. The most recent test drive was in a Nissan Leaf. Nissan Australia has just dropped its price to a semi-affordable $39,990 driveway, from now until the end of October 2013. That’s down $7000 on the previous driveaway deal…. Read more

HOLDEN EXPANDS CAPTIVA RANGE

Holden Captiva 5 LTZ builds on the range of the popular midsize SUV

The new transmission is aimed at reducing fuel consumption and providing very smooth shifts to exactly match driving conditions and Australian drivers’ desires. This new automatic… Read more

MUSCLE CAR MANIA AT NEW YORK AUTO SHOW

Jaguar XKR-S

Hopefully it’s a further sign that the American economy is lifting clear of the mess caused by the GFC, because we were most impressed by the number of high-performance muscle cars that were introduced at the New York Auto Show we attended last week. Here’s a look at some of the best of a great bunch of fast cars. Jaguar XKR-S GT A wit at the show suggested this ultra-hot Jaguar has so many letter in its name that the badge on the back aided the body’s aerodynamics by keeping… Read more

2004 HSV COUPE 4 REVIEW

Monaro’s facelift gives it more visual presence on the road. HSV Coupe 4 s particularly strong in this regard

One very controversial feature distinguishes the VZ Monaro from its predecessor, a pair of bonnet scoops. Everyone who had the chance to talk to us during our road-test period wanted to discuss them. Some thought they looked just great, others liked the concept but weren’t over impressed by the execution. In particular, the doubters didn’t like the angle at which the scoops sat and/or would have preferred a bolder overall design. One thing that all did agree on was the uprated exhaust note. The burble is back in the Holden… Read more
