PASSAT-PLUS BACK ON TRACK FOR SUCCESS

On the outside it’s Sunday-suit smart; on the inside no-fuss functional, and as far as performance is concerned, the new VW Passat Alltrack is an Opera House-style pleasure. Based on the practical Passat wagon, the Passat Alltrack is back adding a fresh face to the eighth generation of the VW mid-size passenger vehicle. It has its own range of standard features and the ability to go that much farther off the bitumen. This is due mainly to the new generation 4Motion all-wheel drive system, plus a feature that allows drivers… Read more

NEW PASSAT ALLTRACK IS CLASSY AND CAPABLE

Volkswagen has added an All-Wheel Drive variant to its flagship Passat model range. Called the Passat Alltrack it joins the eighth-generation sedan and wagons that were launched here in October 2015. A wagon/SUV crossover Alltrack is based on the Passat wagon but is bolstered by 27.5 mm of extra ground clearance, plastic-cladded wheel arch mouldings, flared side sills and underbody protection. Other external cues include distinctive bumpers and 18-inch “Kalamata” alloy wheels. The interior of the Passat Alltrack is stylish and elegant with Vienna leather-trimmed upholstery, leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel… Read more

GOLF RAISES HOPES OF GOLF IN THE ROUGH

With hatchback, wagon, cabriolet, GTI and R ranges, with all their variants, the Golf is the everyman of the Volkswagen world. Now the Alltrack has been added to a seemingly ever-growing family of the best seller. With the latest VW 4Motion all-wheel drive system and a new generation Haldex coupling the Alltrack can take the small wagon on unsealed roads where two-wheel drives are not encouraged to venture. Even so, with the addition of a new 1.8-litre TSI turbocharged petrol engine coupled to a six-speed DSG automatic transmission, the Alltrack… Read more

VW PASSAT WAGON IS PRACTICAL HAULER

The eighth generation of the Volkswagen Passat mid-sized sedan and wagon, coded as the B8 series, arrived in Australia late in 2015. We have just spent a couple of weeks living with a Passat 132TSI station wagon in Comfortline format, and have come away impressed with its practicality and ease of use. New Passat uses the Volkswagen MQB platform which we have already experienced in several others in the latest VW range. The platform reduces weight and permits for a large number of vehicles to be built at the same… Read more

SPORTY POLO PLAYS TO ITS STRENGTHS

With new, more aggressive styling, a new finely-tuned performance 1.8-litre four-cylinder 141 kW TSI engine, mated with either a six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG automatic, the new VW Polo GTI returns to the compact hot hatch segment with new-found flair. It’s as if the Volkswagen Polo GTI has gained enough self-confidence to step out of the shadow of its bigger brother – the iconic Golf GTI – and into the glow of its own making. Polo GTI comes with a grab bag of driver assistance and convenience systems. High-end automobile… Read more

RENAULT VAN A CARRY-FORWARD TO THE FUTURE

When it comes to loading-dock bragging rights, Renault carries the weight of its Formula 1 success as a badge of honour in the shape of technology under the bonnet of the new Trafic. And there’s no Trafic jam when it comes to loading the latest version of the popular Renault van. The eponymous light commercial vehicle from France has grown in many ways. Front and rear overhangs have been extended by 100 mm and 110 mm respectively, while maximum load lengths of 3.75 and 4.15 metres for the L1 standard… Read more

ALL-NEW CADDY FROM VOLKSWAGEN

The biggest news about the latest Volkswagen Caddy is that the glovebox now has a lid – previously it was just a gaping hole in the dashboard. Which sounds like a strange way to open a story, but it illustrates the new direction in which VW is aiming the Caddy. That is, moving it mildly upmarket. The complete driving area of the Caddy has been given a working over to make it less van like and more in the manner of a car. Good idea, we’ve never understood why van… Read more

2015 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF ALLTRACK REVIEW

Volkswagen Golf Alltrack is the latest Golf 7 variant to reach us downunder. A smaller brother of the Passat Alltrack, it has a tougher look than the standard Golf station wagon it’s based on and may appeal to some looking for a mild SUV, but don’t want to be seen as the macho type. While not really an SUV this Alltrack sits higher off the ground and has some off-road ability. In fact it this Alltrack competes in a market segment with many SUV lookalikes that only have 2WD, so… Read more

VOLKSWAGEN TRANSPORTER: SIXTH GENERATION FINALLY HERE

The introduction of a new Volkswagen ‘Kombi’ is a rare event. As the six in T6 suggests this is only the sixth model in 65 years. The first one was simply a VW Beetle floorpan with a boxy body and lower gearing to help the 36 horsepower (a mere 27 kW) engine haul it along without holding the traffic up too much. Okay, we know that the name Kombi is no longer used, and in any case was only used for the people-mover models, but many people still use that… Read more

NEW PASSAT OFFERS PREMIUM QUALITY AT A BUDGET PRICE

New model releases are proving a welcome diversion for Volkswagen Australia as the automotive giant counts the cost of the emissions scandal that continues to make headlines around the world. A couple of weeks ago, as the news of ‘Dieselgate’ broke, we attended the launch of the new Golf Alltrack. That’s been followed now by the release of the eighth generation (B8) version of the Passat mid-sized sedan and wagon. While understandably tight-lipped at the Golf event, VW Australia’s outgoing managing director, John White, was much more open when he… Read more
