MID-SIZE MERC IS THE NEXT BIG THING

Size does matter; in fact, it matters very much, especially in the prestige car market. That’s why the folk at Mercedes-Benz have grown the new C-Class Saloon to cater for the increase in people’s average height – not to mention the increase in the image rating. Wheelbase, track and width are bigger, though many interior dimensions are about the same as in the previous model. Rear seat occupants are the main beneficiaries. In keeping with the upsizing Mercedes has endowed the new C-Class with luxuries normally found in more expensive… Read more

CLASSY NEW MERCEDES C-CLASS

Mercedes C-Class is of vital importance to the German marque. Many typical Mercedes owners still take the purist view that it’s the smallest ‘real’ Mercedes; that is one with relatively conservative styling, a longitudinal engine and rear-wheel drive. The launch of the first all-new C-Class in seven years is an important event in the world’s automotive industry, not only to Mercedes enthusiasts, but also to all car makers. Obviously Audi, BMW and Lexus will pay particular attention, but plenty of makers of low cost cars realise that new Mercs point… Read more

2014 MERCEDES-BENZ CLA 4MATIC REVIEW

Style doesn’t always filter down from luxury marques costing more than $150,000 to the day-to-day cars that are offered by luxury makers to those with thinner wallets. But, there are exceptions – and the new Mercedes-Benz CLA is one of them. We attended the launch in New Zealand of the new all-wheel-drive CLA 250 4Matic that will set you back a relatively modest $64,900, before on roads. Walking into our base for two days in Tauranga there was a red Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 4Matic on show. Here was a car… Read more

MERCEDES-BENZ CLS TURBO-DIESEL OFFERS TREMENDOUS VALUE

We have just reluctantly handed back a Mercedes-Benz CLS 250 CDI four-door coupe that, with a little imagination, can classed as affordable. With a recommended tag of $114,900, the turbo-diesel version sits around $50,000 under the price of the V8 petrol CLS 500 we tested last year. Mercedes-Benz Australia is extremely aggressive at the moment. Its new A-Class is selling its wheels off, and the about to be launched C-Class, the most important vehicle in the importer’s lineup, is receiving a lot of pre-sale publicity. STYLING The original Mercedes CLS,… Read more

MERCEDES-BENZ GLA 4MATIC

In a surprise move, Mercedes-Benz has cancelled the GLA 250 Sport front-wheel-drive model in favour of the 4Matic all-wheel-drive version. Those who put down a deposit on the front wheeler will now get an all-wheeler at no extra cost, a saving of $1500. Not bad for a tad inconvenient change of mind by Mercedes-Benz Australia. As we found at the GLA 4Matic launch those buyers should be well pleased as their new all-wheeler handles the tarmac beautifully and is capable of climbing rough-track mountains, as long as there is no… Read more

2014 MERCEDES-BENZ GLA REVIEW

The Mercedes-Benz GLA is the German giant’s first entry into the small-medium SUV class in Australia. It’s already doing well in the sales race as buyers look for the prestige of the three-pointed star in a practical easy to drive machine. STYLING Mercedes GLA sits midway between an SUV and a station wagon in its shape. The bold frontal style is very A-Class, with which it shares underbody components, and there’s a real emphasis on the aforementioned three-pointed star. There are strong swage lines in the sides. The taillights share… Read more

MERCEDES-BENZ NEW MODELS

Mercedes-Benz S 63 AMG offers 575 horsepower of high-class muscle car

By EWAN KENNEDY CAPTIONS: A.    . B.    .\ C.    . BODY COPY Last week’s article on the recently expanded Mercedes-Benz S-Class range concentrated on the ultra-economy model, the S 300 Hybrid. With an official fuel consumption of a mere 4.5 litres per hundred kilometres it grabbed our attention so we featured a major technical feature on in. Lost in the low fuel usage was news on other new models in the S-Class range. One was a long-wheelbase version of the S 400, a model that’s likely to attract the attention… Read more

MERCEDES-BENZ S 300 HYBRID BREAKS NEW GROUND

In a fascinating move, Mercedes-Benz has launched the hybrid version of its new S 300 Hybrid at a significantly lower price than the rest of the S-Class range. With a recommended price of $195,000 (plus on-road charges) the high-tech hybrid undercuts the previous lowest cost model, the S 350 by $20,000. Mercedes-Benz Australia seems nervous about entering this new, to it, market area so is treating the S-Class S 300 BlueTEC HYBRID (to give it its convoluted full title) as a toe-in-the-water exercise. Having just carried out our first road… Read more

MERCEDES-BENZ A-CLASS 1997 – 2013

2001 Mercedes-Benz A-Class

Two distinctively different Mercedes-Benz A-Class models have been sold. The first generation, launched in 1997, was a radically new design aimed very much at being used in extremely crowded European cities. The second generation, introduced in May 2005 was slightly toned down in appearance, but still followed the same theme as the original. Mercedes-Benz A-Class was temporarily discontinued in Australia midway through 2010 as the B-Class (a sort of stretched A-Class) was stealing many sales from it. The third generation A-Class, sold downunder from the start of 2013, is… Read more

MERCEDES-BENZ SHOWS NEW C-CLASS WAGON

No car is more important to Mercedes-Benz than the C-Class. It has been the best seller in the Mercedes range in many countries for years – and the German giant would like to keep it that way. Hence the advance publicity campaign that began in mid 2013 with a reveal of the shape of the sedan. Now the first photographs of the station wagon have been rolled out to the media. Like the sedan, the new wagon (‘Estate’ in Mercedes-speak) is larger than before, but at the same time is… Read more
