SAY ‘HI’ TO THE LAST WORD IN CAR CONNECTIVITY

Hi, Mercedes, what’s the go? The ’go’ is that the German maker of prestige cars wants buyers of its latest A-Class to treat the compact as their new best friend. A new level of human / machine interaction through MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience), can be activated by saying ‘Hi Mercedes’ to gain access to important functions, destination details, phone calls, music choices, as well as the ability to write and hear messages. I asked MBUX a question in one of the two phrases I remember from O-level German. Disappointingly, no… Read more

MERCEDES-BENZ X-CLASS 250d

The Mercedes-Benz X-Class is the talk of the town amongst admirers of pickup trucks and utes in Australia. The thought of having the prestige of a three-pointed star for only a few thousand dollars more than a somewhat mundane ute has led to instant takeup of sales of the working Mercedes. It’s no secret that the X-Class is based on a Nissan Navara ute, but it has received quite a bit of work by the guys and gals at the German company, including a different body and interior and revised… Read more

LUXURY CRUISING IN NEW MERCEDES CLS

Mercedes-Benz CLS is a four-door coupe that has been a big seller in Australia almost since day one in 2003. At the time it created quite a sensation as it was argued by purists that a four-door car could not be called a coupe. The introduction of the stylish CLS resulted in a rethink of the definition, and we now have coupes with two, three, four or five doors. STYLING The third generation of the Mercedes-Benz four-door CLS Coupe pioneers a new design theme for the prestige car maker. It’s… Read more

MERCEDES-BENZ E-CLASS 2009 – 2017

2009 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

For many decades Mercedes-Benz took a conservative approach with its E-Class, aiming it at buyers who were middle-aged and above. That all changed with the launch of the W212 Series that reached us Downunder in July 2009. Mercedes realised that moderately young, reasonably wealthy people wanted cars from the prestigious German marque, and also wanted stylish machines The W212 was facelifted in August 2013, receiving a large three-dimension grille centred around the iconic three-pointed star. Inside it retained the same overall design, but upgrading of materials increase the feeling of… Read more

MERCEDES-AMG G 63: AN UNLIKELY DRAG RACER

Way back in the mid 1980s I ran hundreds of acceleration tests on a big variety of vehicles at the sadly now defunct Oran Park racetrack. I did the straight-line stuff while Modern Motor’s editor Barry Lake did hot laps. It seemed a bit silly to be photographed sitting in a huge 4WD with the aerodynamics of a house brick – the just launched Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen – but it was our policy to wear skid lids, so we did. I can’t remember what the zero to 100 km/h time was… Read more
