MAZDA CX-5 2012 – 2018

2012 Mazda CX-5

A combination of style and the brilliant red paint finish has had the Mazda CX-5 sitting at the head of the sales race in its class virtually all the time since it arrived here in February 2012. Mazda’s Kodo styling theme with its big grille, long bonnet and deeply sculpted sides works even better in the CX-5 than in the rest of the range. This is a comfortable five-seater if those in the back aren’t overly large, as is usual in this class two adults and a child makes more… Read more

PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE REFLECTED IN NEW-GENERATION MAZDA

The name Astina might not be as old as the hills but the eponymous Mazda certainly goes back well into the past century; to 1963 in fact, when the small family car had its roots in the Familia. Progressing through the Mazda 323 and Protege to the sixth generation in 1989 when the new five-door fastback version was called the Familia Astina in Japan and was sold as the 323F or 323 Astina elsewhere. Thirty years later the Astina is still going strong as the top model of the Mazda3…. Read more

2019 MAZDA6 WAGON IS STYLISH AND PRACTICAL

Conventional station wagons are becoming something of a rarity nowadays with buyer preferences firmly locked into SUVs of various shapes and sizes. Almost all the wagons that remain have adopted the coupe-like Euro styling that distinguishes them from the typical SUV not only with a more stylish design but also by making them more enjoyable to drive and, with their lower centre of gravity, safer with than the typically boxy SUV. Mazda is hedging its bets by selling some of the most popular SUVs while still persevering with a wagon… Read more

MAZDA6 LINEUP REVISED

Mazda Australia is adept at constantly fine tuning its business to gain the best in profits. So changes have been made to the Mazda6, not in appearance, but under the skin. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are finally now standard. And there’s an enhanced audio system for clearer FM radio sound thanks to the fitment of a second antenna. Mazda tells us this expands the overall reception range and cancels out noise generated by secondary wave interference, which occurs when radio waves from the broadcasting station are reflected by solid… Read more

MAZDA MX-5 1990-2017

1998 Mazda MX-5

Normally in our used-car reviews we look at models covering about five to 12 years old, using a major series change to set the dates. However, in this feature we are looking at Mazda MX-5s going back 30 years as they are almost latter day classics. A warning though: though almost all MX-5s are looked after well, but some are not and could be at the stage where expensive repairs are close. Also, many are driven hard. Naturally! I hear you say, but that can also means money rapidly departing… Read more

MAZDA3 SEDAN LAUNCHED

The new Mazda3 sedan has arrived in Australia to join the hatch introduced in March. The sedan can be fitted with either 2.0-litre or 2.5-litre petrol engines. An interesting feature of the 2.5 is its ability to run on only two cylinders in light driving conditions to reduce emissions and fuel consumption. Unusually all models are offered with six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmissions – many other marques only give you a manual in the el-cheapo variant. There are seven body colour options including Mazda’s very popular Soul Red Crystal… Read more
