HYUNDAI i40 2011 – 2018

2011 Hyundai i40

The Hyundai i40 was initially sold only as a station wagon, called the Tourer, when it arrived in Australia in October 2011. A four-door i40 sedan didn’t reach us until May 2012. With the Tourer, Hyundai Australia was chasing potential buyers of crossover SUVs, offering a more sensible vehicle than a high riding wagon. Hyundai wasn’t the first to discover that sensible wagons don’t sell particularly well. That’s because SUVs are often bought by people looking for the macho image, not commonsense transport. Keep in mind wagons such as the… Read more

NEW FOR 2021: THE HYUNDAI i30 SEDAN

Small sedans are out of favour at the moment, with many buyers preferring to drive hatchbacks. However there are still those those who would rather have the added solidarity of a sedan due to strength provided by steel below the rear window. Another reason buyers like sedans is that most of them also provide a larger luggage capacity due to their extra length compared with a hatch. So Hyundai has launched an all-new 2021 i30 Sedan. The name is hardly an exciting one, just plain “Sedan”, but can be argued… Read more

VELOSTER: THAT’S MORE LIKE IT, SPORT

It looks like a sports car; sounds like a sports car, it is a sports car . . . well, not always. Sometimes, performance is not all it’s cracked up to be. Take the Veloster, for example. When the Hyundai first came out, with its out-there looks and unusual architecture, it shaped up to be a challenger to the hot hatch mob. Unfortunately, somebody had forgotten to give it the performance to match. The Veloster was held back by a naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine. Many forgave shortcomings, much talk being… Read more

HYUNDAI IONIQ SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVED

Hyundai IONIQ Electric

It has only been on the market for a short time, but given the rapid advances being made in electric vehicles it’s no surprise that the Hyundai IONIQ Electric has received major changes for 2020. These are greatest in its pure electric format where it has not only enhanced performance but a greatly extended 311km all-electric range, when measured on the official WLTP standard. The pure electric now has a more powerful 100kW synchronous motor, and 100kW DC fast-charging capability. Hyundai’s first dedicated eco vehicle is sold with a choice… Read more

HYUNDAI IONIQ – THREE SHADES OF GREEN

Hyundai has taken itself to the forefront of automotive battery technology with its Ioniq hatchback being the only vehicle to be offered in Australia with three different variations of electric power – petrol/electric hybrid, petrol/plug-in electric hybrid and fully electric. Although the name does have a Greek sound to it, Ioniq is actually a blend of ‘ion’ and ‘unique’. The word ion refers to an atom or molecule with a net electric charge while unique is one of the most misused words in the English language – but we won’t… Read more

HYUNDAI VENUE – GOOD THINGS COME IN SMALL PACKAGES

Hyundai has launched the fourth, and smallest, member of its SUV range. Indeed, at just 4040 mm long, Hyundai Venue is one of the shortest of all models in the compact SUV market. Only the Suzuki Jimny is shorter, at 3645 mm. Venue’s stubby body is offset by an overall height measurement of 1592 mm which effectively dictates the boxy shape that used to characterise early SUVs before the stylists stepped in and began trying to outdo each other. Having said that we love the neat and functional styling that’s… Read more
