HOLDEN SPARK HOLDS ITS OWN – PLUS A LOT MORE

Australia is one of the toughest countries of all in which to sell cars. A huge number of marques with a mind-numbing selection of models are being endlessly promoted by marketing gals and guys. All of whom are desperate to gain more than their fair share of the automotive sales action. Their efforts tax the strength of my inbox and letter box every day. We motoring journos have to consign much of the marketing hyperbole to our trash bins – electronic as well as the square type under the desk… Read more

HOLDEN COMMODORE 1997 – 2015

2011 Holden Commodore Redline SS V

Big, tough and built for Australia, the Holden Commodore is perfectly suited to our driving conditions and meets the needs of drivers who demand more than simply transport in their family sedans and wagons. Handling is impressive for a car of this size. Yet the Commodore provides comfort even when being bashed along bush roads that have seen better days, not to mention corrugated dirt roads. Surfaces that trouble very expensive German cars of the same size class as the Holden are simply shrugged off by our Aussie machines. Commodore… Read more

CASCADA IS HOLDEN’S NEW CRUISING CONVERTIBLE

Another new name on the Australian motoring scene, Holden Cascada is the convertible version of the Holden Astra. The cars are sourced from Holden’s General Motors affiliate, Opel. Opinions are divided on the material used for convertible roofs. In the last decade or so there was a move away from the traditional fabric top towards a solid retractable roof, the logic being that buyers wanted the perceived advantages of the looks and security of a coupe when the roof is closed. Opel / Holden followed this trend with the previous… Read more

INSIGNIA VXR: EXCELLENT OPENING SHOT FROM HOLDEN

Holden Insignia VXR is designed and built by GM-Opel in Germany – but its engine is made in Holden’s Melbourne plant. From Australia the engine is sent to Europe to be installed in many cars sold globally. Though the Aussie engine is the big news, there’s plenty of Australian engineering input in many facets of the car which will play an important part of the future for GM-Holden. Very much a sports sedan, Holden says Insignia VXR will compete directly with the likes of Subaru Liberty and Volkswagen… Read more

SERIES II VF COMMODORE IS THE MOST POWERFUL YET

With the clock ticking down towards the end of local production Holden has released the Series II version of its VF Commodore. Because the nameplate is set to continue as an import after the factory closes in 2017 Holden is aware of the importance of keeping Commodore up to date and so hasn’t ruled out another update sometime in 2016. However it’s safe to say that this will be the final major change to the car that has been such a feature of the Australian automotive industry for the past… Read more

Examples of all 37 years of Commodore to date were on display, not just cars you see on… Read more

HOLDEN STATESMAN AND CAPRICE 1997 – 2015

2004 Holden Caprice

Holden Statesman and Caprice are stretched versions of the standard Holden Commodore sedan. The extra length adds considerably more legroom in the rear seat and stretch out comfort is the main reason people buy them. Statesman is the lower-cost model, Caprice the upmarket one. Though not as refined as the large, upmarket European cars in ride or handling, these big Australians are better suited to local road conditions than the Germans and Brits. In particular, they can cope with hundreds of thousands of kilometres of pounding along corrugated dirt roads… Read more

HOLDEN’S HOT NEW INSIGNIA VXR

By EWAN KENNEDY in Queenstown, New Zealand. Holden VXR is one of the most important models for the company in its inexorable move away from building cars in Australia to being a full time importer. GM Holden, as it prefers to be known these days also wants to be seen in a more upmarket light. Very much a sports sedan, Holden says Insignia VXR will compete directly with the likes of Subaru Liberty and Volkswagen Passat CC. We were surprised that Audi’s quattro models weren’t mentioned, given the aforementioned desired… Read more
