ANGER AT 4WDs

Nissan’s giant Patrol is handy in the bush

Time and again we motoring journalist are asked the question, “Why don’t they ban big 4WDs from the suburbs?” Usually followed by, “because 4WDs block the vision of others drivers and are hazardous to pedestrians.” I’ve also heard plenty of complaints about threatening behaviour by those behind the wheels of 4WDs and SUVs. And in more recent times by drivers of big 4WD dual-cab utes. Yet sales of 4WDs, which is the name usually only given to genuine off-road vehicles; and SUVs, the title used for most light duty off-roaders… Read more

SPACE SAVING SPARES

There has been a lot of criticism of space-saver spare wheels in some quarters. Much of it unjustified and ill-considered in my opinion. Space-savers are wheel/tyre combinations that are significantly narrower and slightly smaller in diameter than standard units. Their main reason for existing is to give more room in the boot. Firstly, because of the increasingly large tyres being fitted to modern cars. Secondly, as people move down to smaller cars to save fuel and reduce emissions they like to retain as much interior space as possible. Space-saver tyres… Read more

PASSENGERS IN THE DRIVER’S SEAT

Had a long bus ride the other day and took a look at some of the habits of drivers with whom we were sharing the road. Some of the things I saw were truly horrifying. In particular the people you have to call ‘passengers in the driver’s seat’. Drivers who had left in a bit of a rush, so had brought their meals along with them are a real worry. Watching one guy doing an accidental lane swerve whilst taking the wrapping of his hamburger had me in fear of… Read more

TWO HANDS ON THE WHEEL

“It’s easy to spot the worst drivers on the road,” said the noisy bloke at the barbie, “They are the ones who always drive with two hands on the steering wheel.” I must admit this stunned me. Regular readers will be well aware that I am forever preaching, “Always keep two hands on the wheel, two eyes on the road and all of your attention on driving.” Any other way of driving increases our chances of avoiding crash, or at least minimising the effects of one. It’s easy to ignore… Read more

BOOTS AND ALL

Peugeot 308 sedan is built exclusively for the all-important Chinese market

I’ve written on more than one occasion about the endless compromises that rule the lives of all involved in car design. These poor guys and gals are forever juggling cost, weight, safety, ease of repair, environmental considerations and many other factors. Not to mention that old ogre of time, of which there never seems to be enough. Another compromise that has been intriguing me lately is in an area some may consider mundane – sedan boots. Mundane, that is until you have to use one and discover that loading stuff… Read more

SELF-DRIVING CARS

Google self-driving car has gained a huge amount of interest

I’m amazed by the number of people who ask my opinion about self-driving cars. Even friends and neighbours who have little or no interest in cars or driving often bring up the subject of autonomous cars. With the question, “When are they coming?” being asked pretty early in the conversation. Self-driving cars seem to be the dream of those who regard cars purely as a way of getting from point A to point B. Not surprisingly, they are hated with a passion by keen drivers who love nothing more than… Read more

COMMON SENSE SAVES LIVES

Common sense saves lives, and no more so than on the roads of Australia. Let’s look at two very different drivers and a pair of driving situations. One is a 19-year-old bloke in a 22 year-old Toyota Corolla. So the car is older than he is – and it has seen better days. Though technically it is roadworthy, the Corolla has tyres that are barely legal, the absorbers don’t damp particularly well as they have done a lot of work over the years and have never been tested. Likewise, the… Read more

LATEST LEXUS LOOKS TO TRADITION

Many automobile makers are trying their hardest to wring as much performance and fuel economy out of vehicles through force-fed ‘mini me’ motors with five, four, or even three cylinders. Then there are those companies that are run by old-school car enthusiasts who value performance and responsiveness courtesy of eight pots and above, pumping out power to burn. One such unlikely manufacturer following the tradition is Lexus, the luxury arm of Toyota, with its F Series designed to attract a new type of customer – one with a passion for… Read more

REAL WORLD FUEL CONSUMPTION TESTING

Checking the emissions of a Volkswagen Golf is an important business

The Volkswagen Group emissions cheating scandal has again brought up the argument that emissions and fuel consumption testing should be done in the real world, not in laboratories. Which sounds good in principle and I can understand why the general public is calling out for it. However, there are far too many variables in the real world so comparisons between vehicles require identical testing, which can only be done inside a building where temperature and weather are under control and cars are driven in an extremely accurate manner to follow… Read more

STRIKING NEW BMW 7 SERIES

Traditionally, the top-end models from the big three Germans marques have taken a conservative route in their styling, leaving the smaller models in the lineups to experiment with new ideas. The just launched all-new BMW 7 Series has surprised everyone with its sleek, innovative shape. Take a look at the complex front and the positively avantgarde bling in the lower surfaces of the doors, bling that sweeps up into the front guards. The large inbuilt exhaust outlets do their share in the strong appearance. Fascinatingly, there are even traces of… Read more
